A pair of teams out of the AFC East looking for their first win will square off on Sunday. The New England Patriots and New York Jets are set to meet in Week 2. The Patriots lost their opener 17-16 to the Miami Dolphins, while the Jets were downed on the road at Carolina 19-14. The latest NFL betting odds have the New England Patriots as the favorites. You can grab New England at -5, and the total at 43.
New England has high hopes for rookie quarterback Mac Jones. The former Alabama signal-caller threw for 281 yards and a touchdown in the loss. His lone touchdown throw was to Nelson Agholor, who ended the game with 72 yards.
Damien Harris was the lead running back for the Patriots, finishing with 23 carries and 100 yards. However, his lost fumble in the final moments deep in Miami territory cost New England the game. Veteran running back James White carried the ball just four times for 12 yards but he had six receptions for 49 yards. Tight end Hunter Henry was added to the offense this season but did not play a big role with just three catches for 31 yards.
The Jets will also start a rookie quarterback. No. 2 overall pick Zach Wilson ended up throwing two touchdown passes, but they both came after New York was trailing 16-0 at halftime. Wilson found Corey Davis in the third quarter and again late in the fourth. Wilson ended the game with 258 passing yards on 20-of-37.
New York’s running game was pathetic in the loss, as the leading running back finished with 24 yards. That was Tevin Coleman. Ty Johnson and Michael Carter also got some carries, but neither of the backs were effective.
