A pair of NFC teams with disappointing showings in 2020 will face each other in their season opener. The Philadelphia Eagles take on the Atlanta Falcons, Sunday at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

The BetUS Sportsbook gives the Atlanta Falcons the benefit of the doubt at home, installing them as 3½-point favorites in the NFL odds. That line hasn’t budged since it opened back in May. The total, on the other hand, opened at 47 and has since floated up to 48.

The Eagles came off a 4-11-1 season which saw the end of an era: Carson Wentz played his last game as the team’s quarterback, and the team canned Super Bowl-winning head coach Doug Pederson at the end of the season.

Nick Sirianni is now the man in charge in Philly, with Jalen Hurts as starting quarterback for the 2021 season. The former Oklahoma signal-caller finished the season strong in his back-up role last year. Hurts will look to tight end Zach Ertz early and often, and also rely on the core of Jalen Regor and Greg Ward to aid his passing game.

The Atlanta Falcons also won just four games and fired their head coach, Dan Quinn. Arthur Smith is now in charge of the Falcons. Matt Ryan will once again be under center, but will be without long-time target Julio Jones, who’s now with the Tennessee Titans.

Mike Davis and Wayne Gallman make up the two-headed backfield for Atlanta. The pressure is on the Falcons to find an effective running game in order to keep the pressure off their 36-year-old quarterback. The Falcons are expecting big things from tight end Kyle Pitts in his first season.

Neither team is expected to make the postseason this year. The Eagles are -325 for their odds to not make the playoffs, while the Falcons are -250 to miss a postseason berth.
