The San Francisco 49ers (2-2) are coming off a big Monday night win. Now, they take on the Carolina Panthers (1-3) in Charlotte. Whether the Niners were that good, or the Los Angeles Rams just stunk Monday, it was a much-needed (24-9) win. Carolina lost, 26-16, at the Arizona Cardinals.
At least against the Rams, San Francisco showed the world that, Trey Lance or not, they’re a contender. With Jimmy Garopolo back at quarterback, it’s difficult to argue with his results in 2½ games since retaking the reins. The Panthers have the rest/travel advantage, but that’s seemingly about it.
San Francisco 49ers
After what San Francisco did to the LA Rams Monday night, we’re somewhat surprised to see the spread at just a touchdown in this game. The 49ers shut down a Super Bowl-winning offense, and now have a ‘cupcake’ in the Panthers. Carolina’s awful offensively, ranking among the worst teams in football in yards gained, both on the ground or through the air.
The 49ers also do a lot of little things. San Francisco ranks eighth in takeaway margin per game, the Panthers 24th. Carolina surrenders 62½ offensive penalty yards per game or 15 more than the 49ers.
San Francisco has the tools to dismantle Carolina on both sides of the ball.
Even with an extra day of rest to prepare, we don’t have a lot of faith in the Panthers and quarterback Baker Mayfield to get it done Sunday. Remember that the Niner defense is one of the best in the league, holding the reigning champs to three field goals.
Carolina’s dead-last in yards per game, and will have a hard time getting anything accomplished. The Panthers are 24th in rushing yards, and 30th in passing through four weeks of miserable play.
Mayfield hasn’t eclipsed 200 yards passing in the last three games, meaning the 49er secondary should have its way.

49ers vs Panthers Prediction
It’s a touchdown spread in this game, and it’s a beatable line after what the 49ers did to the Rams Monday night. The Panthers are a tier or two lower in terms of skill than the Rams, and their offense doesn’t produce. Look for the 49ers defense to feast, and Jimmy Garopollo’s offense to take another step forward.
