The 49ers are back to Jimmy Garoppolo at quarterback, that after Trey Lance was lost for the season last week. Meanwhile, there are already calls to fire new Broncos’ coach Nathaniel Hackett after just two games.

San Francisco 49ers

Is it a nightmare, or a crisis averted? A negative spin or a positive emphasis describes the San Francisco 49ers thus far this season.

The negative spin is that they wasted all that draft capital on Trey Lance, whose season-ending fractured right ankle will hinder his development into the quarterback the team hoped he would become.

Maybe he fully recuperates, returning in 2023. However, the best way to learn is to play, and Lance won’t again, at least this season.

A setback to be sure, since San Francisco doesn’t have a quarterback of the future. It only has one at the present moment. At least it’s a good one in Jimmy Garoppolo.

Imagine if the 49ers had dealt Garoppolo, as was speculated. Their season would effectively be over. Instead, they can again make a legitimate run at a title.

They won’t be favored to reach the Super Bowl, but they did reach the NFC Championship with Jimmy G last season.

There’s a chance in a suspect NFC. It will be interesting to see how Garoppolo and his teammates react to a road test at Denver in a close game on the NFL odds.

Denver Broncos

This is the puzzling situation at quarterback. The Denver Broncos acquired Russell Wilson in the offseason to seemingly fix the one position of desperate need.

After toiling with Drew Lock and Brett Rypien and Jeff Driskell and other subpar quarterbacks, the Broncos were supposed to roll.

However, Denver has scored exactly 16 points in each of its first two games, and under as a team has been one of the easiest bets in the sportsbook so far.

That’s two touchdowns in 120 minutes (eight quarters) of football. It’s not what any Denver fan or coach had in mind.

Wilson hasn’t looked good at all, and the question is whether it’s him or the coaching staff/scheme?

Wilson had six completions in his first 20 passes in Week 2 at home versus the Houston Texans. The Broncos did prevail, 16-9, but their offense looked incredibly bad, or not one bit better than it did under Lock.

Rookie coach Nathaniel Hackett has been noticeably poor in getting this offense to produce. Maybe it’s still early? This will provide some evidence.
