The San Francisco 49ers will start their 2021 season in Detroit to take on the Lions. Ford Field will be the venue for this NFC battle. The last time these two teams played was back in September of 2018, with the 49ers coming away with a 30-27 win.
Many expect the Detroit Lions to be woefully bad in 2021. That’s exemplified by the BetUS NFL point spread for this game. Despite being the road team, San Francisco is listed at -7½. If you are looking at betting the over/under, it’s listed at 45½.
The San Francisco 49ers will start with Jimmy Garoppollo at quarterback, but many are wondering when they will get their chance to see Trey Lance under center. In the meantime, the 49ers will look to compete in a very tough NFC West with Seattle, Arizona, and the Los Angeles Rams. Garoppollo will turn 30 later during the season and is coming off a very underwhelming, and injury-riddled 2020 season.
Raheem Mostert is emerging as a very reliable running back for San Francisco. He will be challenged in the backfield by first-year running back Trey Sermon. The 22-year-old was the third-round pick by the 49ers out of Ohio State.
For Detroit, out is Matthew Stafford, and in is Jared Goff. Goff, the former Rams’ signal-caller will not have a ton to work with in Detroit. Marvin Jones and Kenny Golladay were two fixtures in the receiving core for Detroit, and have both gone elsewhere. Tight end T.J. Hockenson is set to be the man that receives the most targets in 2021.
Detroit is going to go with the combination of D’Andre Swift and Jamaal Williams in the backfield. The Lions come into the season with some of the highest odds to make the playoffs at +600.
