San Francisco 49ers vs Houston Texans

Previewing the San Francisco 49ers vs Houston Texans Matchup

The San Francisco 49ers and the Houston Texans bring down the curtain on their preseason with a meeting on Thursday Night Football.

Preseason games are difficult to predict with many star players sitting adjacent on the sidelines and coaches holding back on their playcalling. However, Week 3 is the last-chance saloon for players looking to make the cut. And it’s the last look fans get before the real thing.

San Francisco is entering the 2022 season with second-year quarterback Trey Lance, deciding to move on from veteran signal-caller Jimmy Garoppolo. A quarterback change is no small thing. In most cases, it’ll hurt a team’s betting value. But not in the Niners’ case, or so it seems.

The NFL odds list San Francisco(+175) as the second best bet to win the NFC West and just a smidgen shy of the Los Angeles Rams at +125. By contrast, the Texans (+2800) prop up the AFC South as the fourth best bet to win the division.

The Texans are one of the redevelopment projects going into 2022. Expectations are therefore low across the sportsbook board. That includes even this Week 3 preseason game, which we’re going to dive into below.

Read on for our NFL betting preview. We’ll check the latest NFL news, stats, injury reports, and NFL odds for the 49ers vs Texans game before capping it all off with NFL picks and predictions for your consideration.

49ers

Kyle Shanahan rested Lance in the San Francisco 49ers’ second preseason game at the weekend, yet the Niners pulled off the 17-7 win over the Minnesota Vikings at U.S. Bank Stadium.

It’s likely that the quick turnaround on the short week was a motivating factor to sit Lance along with the majority of the Niners’ starters. It’s also likely that they’ll get some semblance of action in this final bout before the first week of the 2022 NFL season gets underway in a fortnight.

One would think Lance needs the reps more than most. The kid hasn’t played a lot of football since 2019 and his resume is sparse as a result. He has 17 college football games under his belt and two NFL starts in 2021 (1-1 W-L).

In Week 1, the Niners beat the Green Bay Packers 28-21 with Lance featuring briefly in the game. The No. 3 pick in the 2021 NFL draft went 4 of 5 for 92 yards and a touchdown. Brock Purdy and Nate Sudfield did most of the heavy-lifting for the Niners in Week 2, doing enough to lift the Niners to their second preseason win.

Texans

Look now because the Houston Texans sit pretty at the top of the AFC South standings with a 2-0 record in the preseason. The Texans beat the New Orleans Saints and the Super Bowl champion Rams.

Projected starter Davis Mills got decent action in Houston’s win over Los Angeles. Mills went 10 of 17 for 96 yards and a touchdown in the 24-20 win. Backups Kyle Allen and Jeff Driskel both got turns as well. Allen went 9 of 12 for 71 yards and a touchdown while Driskel went 3 of 3 for 17 yards and a touchdown.

It’s probably not wise to read too much into the Texans’ preseason efforts or record. Clearly, it’s had no bearing on their betting online odds or done much to change perceptions ahead of 2022. But they [Texans] can at least be pleased with how well they’re performing. It’s something to build on.

49ers vs Texans Injury Report

49ers: Defensive lineman Kalia Davis (knee) and cornerback Jason Vernett are out indefinitely.

Texans: Wide receiver John Metchie III (illness) is out indefinitely while wide receiver Chester Rogers is on I-R.

49ers vs Texans Head-to-Head

The San Francisco 49ers lead the head-to-head series 4-1, a run of form that includes a 4-0-1 ATS record and a 2-3-0 record in total betting.

The Niners romped to the 23-7 victory on Jan. 2, 2022, to come through as the whopping 14-point favorites for those backers who bet online, It marked their third straight win against the Texans, dating back to 2013.

The Texans’ lone victory came in 2009 when they edged the Niners 24-21. It goes without saying, these earlier results have no bearing on the betting here.

49ers vs Texans Prediction

The Niners are ripped as the favorites at the sportsbook betting exchange, priced at -3½ against the spread and as the -180 odds-on favorites to win straight up. The total in the meanwhile is projected to 41 points.

As mentioned at the start of this preview, preseason games are unpredictable and can easily go against the grain. Take for instance the fact that the Texans are the winningest team in the AFC South right now, which stands in stark contrast to their regular season odds.

Both the Niners and Texans have played well in this exhibition month, so it’s reasonable to assume that they’ll be equally eager to finish on a positive note.

It’s easy to understand why the Niners are the road favorites – they’re the darlings of the bookmakers right now. But the Texans have punched above their weight class to go 2-0 SU and ATS in the last two weeks. That’s something to consider before settling on your NFL picks against the spread.

For our money, the Texans to cover as the 3 ½ home underdogs is worth the tickle. However, if both sides field their starters for a good portion of this game, the over on the totals might be the best angle with which to approach this game.
