The Seattle Seahawks and Pittsburgh Steelers are in similar positions entering the 2022 NFL season. Both teams are watching their divisions get stronger, and they are having a hard time keeping up.
This is a transition year for both teams as neither – at least on paper – is a serious Super Bowl contender due to quarterback issues. This year is about finding good players who can be part of a long-term formula for 2023 and beyond.
Speaking of the signal callers, they’ll be a key to the NFL betting odds here. If you betonline, note that both teams are evaluating who’ll lead their teams this year, so this game is worth watching.
The Seahawks traded Russell Wilson so he could pursue a Super Bowl elsewhere. The team now has an uncertain situation at quarterback.
Geno Smith is the QB1 and will start this game, but Drew Lock is pushing him. Because the quarterbacks are in a heated battle for the starting job, you should expect them to both play at least one and a half quarters.
The third-stringer, Jacob Eason, might get half a quarter of work, but Smith and Lock should both get a lot of snaps io that Pete Carroll can get a lot of information on the two signal-callers.
Eason should get more work later in the preseason. This game should belong to Smith and Lock, so keep that in mind if you’re handicapping the NFL odds.
What you see with the Seahawks is similar to what you should see from the Steelers. Pittsburgh lost its Super Bowl-winning quarterback,
Ben Roethlisberger, and is starting over at quarterback. Many people around the NFL think the Steelers will try to acquire Jimmy Garoppolo from the San Francisco 49ers, but that time has not yet come.
For now, it’s Mitch Trubisky leading Mason Rudolph for the starting job. Much like Seattle, Pittsburgh has a situation where neither quarterback is especially good. Two mediocre quarterbacks are in a close competition for the QB1 job.
You should therefore see Trubisky and Rudolph get a lot of action in this game, just like Geno Smith and Drew Lock for the Seahawks.
Given the similar situations for these teams at the most important position on the field, the betting calculus is harder, not easier, to read.
Seahawks vs Steelers Injury Report
Lots of players are questionable for this game. In a regular-season game, questionable usually means the player has a moderately good chance of playing.
In the preseason, teams don’t have to take any chances, so “questionable” is not as optimistic of an indicator of that player’s status.
Among the notable players for each team who are questionable: L.J. Collier and Ryan Neal for Seattle, Diontae Johnson and Alex Highsmith for Pittsburgh.
Seahawks vs Steelers Head-to-Head
These teams met last October in Pittsburgh. The Steelers won 23-20 in overtime. Notably, Smith played in that game for the Seahawks.

Seahawks vs Steelers Prediction
Pete Carroll is 26-17 in preseason games while Mike Tomlin is 34-24. That indicates that both teams seem to make an effort.
The Steelers are favored in the sportsbook because they’re at home and Trubisky is seen as a slightly better quarterback than Smith and that might be true.
What might actually decide the game is that Pittsburgh backup Rudolph is definitely better than Seattle backup Lock.
Those two will likely play in the third quarter, and maybe also the fourth. If neither coach goes to his third-string QB, pick Pittsburgh.
If, however, the Steelers turn to third-stringer Kenny Pickett in the fourth quarter, Seattle probably gets the edge.
