The Washington Commanders won Carson Wentz’s first game with his new NFL team. To the surprise of many who bet online, he looked quite crisp in the win. Is that just because he was playing Jacksonville?
This week, they’ll visit the Detroit Lions, who fell at home in their season opener. Detroit has been an underdog on the NFL odds for 24 straight games but if this line holds, the Lions will break that dubious streak.
Which team is the best bet for your NFL picks in this spot?
Wentz did throw two interceptions against the Jacksonville Jaguars, but he also threw for four touchdowns and was able to make big plays in an ugly, choppy game.
Ugly Week 1 games are to be expected, so what matters is finding a way to win. Wentz and the Commanders did that, prevailing by a 28-22 score.
Washington’s Swiss Army knife offensive weapon, Antonio Gibson, gained 130 all-purpose yards – 72 rushing, 58 passing – as the Commanders were able to find a path forward against the Jaguars’ defense.
Washington won despite rushing for just 85 yards as a team. No one other than Gibson was able to make a significant impact as a rusher. Can the Commanders maintain success if they’re relying on the shoulder of Wentz?
The Washington Commanders get another manageable opponent in Week 2 – one that their defense might be able to keep under wraps. If they can contain D’Andre Swift and disrupt Jared Goff’s rhythm, they’ll be in good shape.
The Detroit Lions dug themselves a 38-21 deficit before falling 38-35 to the Eagles at home in Week 1. They fought back after trailing by 17 in the fourth quarter, so they didn’t roll over.
They came into this season thinking that they had made substantial progress, based on the strong finish to a generally difficult 2021 season.
They were horrible in the first part of 2021 but ended the season on a high note with wins over the Arizona Cardinals and Minnesota Vikings.
The hope was that the end of 2021 would carry over into the start of 2022, but that did not happen.
The Lions’ defense was outclassed by the Philadelphia offense, making this game against Washington that much more important for the Lions’ prospects.
Detroit has each of its first two games at home. Not being able to at least split those two home games will point to a difficult road ahead for Detroit if it can’t defeat Washington.
Jared Goff was average against the Eagles, completing 21-of-37 passes for a modest 215 yards with two touchdowns and an interception.
Keep in mind that Detroit trailed by a large margin for a good portion of the game, making those stats look even less impressive.

Commanders vs Lions Prediction
The Lions need this game more than the Commanders and Wentz – who threw two picks in Week 1 – has to prove he can make fewer mistakes before earning the full benefit of the doubt.
Even so, the Washington defense is probably the best unit of the four offenses and defenses on the field this weekend. They should control the Lions, which will allow the Commanders to win a tight game.
