20 Wins in a Row? Analyzing the Odds of an Elusive Perfect NFL Season

Going undefeated in the NFL is challenging, with only one team having ever done it. The 1972 Miami Dolphins, led by Don Shula, is the only team in league history with a perfect season. The odds of that ever happening again are tough, especially with 17 regular season games now.

In 1972, the Dolphins only had to win 17 games: 14 in the regular season, two in the playoffs, and then Super Bowl VII. For a team to go undefeated now, they would have to win 17 regular-season games, two in the playoffs, and close out by winning the Super Bowl. That would be 20 straight wins.

The only other team to get close to a perfect season was the 2007 New England Patriots. They went 16-0 in the regular season and made it to the Super Bowl before losing to the New York Giants, ending the season with an 18-1 record.

Four teams had undefeated seasons before the NFL used a playoff system in 1932. However, there was also no overtime, and ties were not counted against a team’s winning percentage. The Akron Pros (1920), the Canton Bulldogs (1922 and 1923), and the Green Bay Packers (1929) all had undefeated seasons but at least one draw.

After 1932, only four teams had undefeated regular seasons. The Dolphins in 1972, the Patriots in 2007, and the Chicago Bears twice, in 1934 and 1942. Both of those Bears teams would not win a game in the playoffs, losing the NFL Championship Game and falling short of a perfect season.

The last team to even get close to an undefeated regular season was the Carolina Panthers in 2015. They finished the regular season with a 15-1 record and made it to the Super Bowl. However, they would suffer their second-season loss in the final game.

Which NFL Team Is Favorite to Go Undefeated In 2024?

With how difficult it is for a team to have a perfect season, BetUS makes it slightly easier to bet by keeping it focused on the regular season. There are odds for every NFL team to have a 17-0 regular season record.

The Kansas City Chiefs are the betting favorites at +3000, which makes sense. The Chiefs are the reigning Super Bowl Champions and are going for a three-peat in 2024. They have had tremendous success over the last six seasons, playing in four Super Bowls and winning three.

However, the closest the Chiefs have ever been to an undefeated regular season was 2020, when they went 14-2 (the NFL moved to 17 regular season games the following season). They suffered their first loss in Week 5 and the second in the season’s final game, deciding to rest key players with the No.1 seed in the AFC already locked up.

While the Chiefs are Super Bowl favorites in 2024, with odds at +600 to win their third straight, it is unlikely they’ll do it with a perfect regular season record. While Patrick Mahomes is a two-time MVP and arguably the best player in the league, the Chiefs have undergone many changes this season. Outside of tight end Travis Kelce, the receiving core around Mahomes is a question mark. On top of that, the Chiefs had to trade their top cornerback, L’Jarius Sneed, creating a potential issue in one of the best defenses from 2023.

Beyond the Chiefs: Dark Horse Bets for a Perfect NFL Season

Outside of the Chiefs, the San Francisco 49ers and Baltimore Ravens are the two teams with the next best chance of going undefeated in 2024. Both are tied for the second-best odds, with the Buffalo Bills at +4000.

In 2023, the 49ers were third in points scored and allowed, arguably the most blanched team in the league. They made it to the Super Bowl before losing to the Chiefs, but they also had five losses in the regular season. The roster for the 49ers has mostly stayed the same, which still makes them a threat to compete for the Super Bowl in 2024 and a potential undefeated season.

The Ravens are similar, finishing as the No.1 seed in the AFC last season but losing to the Chiefs in the Conference Championship. The Ravens had the best record in the AFC, going 13-4. This offseason, they added Derrick Henry, one of the top running backs in the league, to create a backfield that features Lamar Jackson, arguably the best running quarterback in the league. That will become a dynamic offensive duo supported by an elite defense. Still, the Ravens are in one of the toughest divisions, which will make it hard for them to go undefeated.

However, the biggest dark horse to have an undefeated regular season is the Philadelphia Eagles, with odds of +8000. In 2022, they only lost three games in the regular season, making it to the Super Bowl before losing to the Chiefs. But in 2023, the Eagles struggled, losing six of their last seven games, including one disappointing playoff performance. Still, this is one of the best rosters in the NFL, which only improved through the draft and in free agency by signing running back Saquon Barkley.

Best Betting Option

A team to go 20-0 is nearly impossible, with BetUS setting the odds at +4000. Beyond that, it is also challenging to predict what team might go undefeated in the regular season 2024. The best options are the Chiefs, 49ers, Ravens, and Eagles, but none have a great shot.

That makes the best betting option a wager on any team to finish with a perfect regular season record. The betting line for that is set at +1200, which is better than picking just one team.

Questions Of The Day

Will an NFL team end the 2024 regular season with a 17-0 record?

It will be incredibly difficult for a team to finish the regular season with a perfect record, but the Chiefs, Ravens, 49ers, and Eagles have the best chance of doing so.
