2022 NFL Preview: Green Bay Packers

For nearly, the entire 2022 season, rumors floated Aaron Rodgers was done playing for the Green Bay Packers. All gossip was silenced after Rodgers signed a three-year, $150.8 million extension. As the fifth pick (+1200) to win the Super Bowl, the Packers remain a contender with one of the NFL’s legendary QBs.

However, replacing the league’s top wide receiver, Davante Adams, is a concern. Will Rodgers’ receivers be good enough? Elsewhere, the Packers’ defense added key pieces in the draft.

  • To win NFC +550
  • To win Super Bowl +1200
  • To make playoffs Yes -450/ No +325

Packers Offense

As Aaron Rodgers nears 40, he’s playing some of the best football of his career. He comes off back-to-back MVP seasons. In both years, Rodgers threw for over 4,000 yards with a completion percentage of 68.9% or better. There are no concerns about Green Bay’s QB; the Packers have the best in the NFL.

However, will Rodgers keep up this level of production minus Davante Adams? The Packers’ wideouts are a concern.

Allen Lazard — who has a career-high of 513 receiving yards — projects as the No. 1 wideout. Sammy Watkins was signed in free agency, and Randall Cobb is a holdover from 2021. Rookies Romeo Doubs and Christian Watson could step into larger roles as the season progresses.

Green Bay could lean on the run game with one of the NFL’s best one-two punches, Aaron Jones and AJ Dillon. If healthy, the offensive line will be solid. All-Pro left tackle David Bakhtiari is still recovering from a knee injury sustained late in the 2020 season.

Packers Defense

The Packers’ defense, which ranked 10th in allowed points per game (21.3) and eighth in allowed yards per game (321.7), returns its major contributors.

Edge-rusher Rashan Gary is poised for an All-Pro caliber season following his 9.5 sacks in 2021. Opposite of Gary, Preston Smith also comes off a good year with nine sacks. Nose tackle Kenny Clark could make more noise after the Packers solidified the interior defensive line with the additions of Jarran Reed and first-round rookie Devonte Wyatt.

At linebacker, All-Pro De’Vondre Campbell will be one of the leaders of the unit. In the first round of the draft, Green Bay added linebacker Quay Walker from Georgia. Walker has drawn praise; NFL lines give him +1200 odds to win Defensive Rookie of the Year.

The passing defense could drastically improve with the return of lockdown corner Jaire Alexander. Also, cornerback Eric Stokes could make strides in his second year.

Player to Watch: OLB Rashan Gary

Packers Team Strength

Of course, Rodgers at QB is a major strength. Poor play from receivers could be the only thing to hold him back following two MVP awards.

Green Bay’s run game should be exceptional this season. The Packers ranked 19th in rushing yards per game (109.3) in 2021. There should be a big improvement here with Dillon’s breakout alongside Jones, who has been one of the NFL’s most versatile backs.

On defense, the secondary could be excellent with Alexander returning. Safety Adrian Amos continues to be one of the NFL’s most underrated defensive backs, while Darnell Savage has been solid.

Packers Team Weakness

As one of the sportsbook’s Super Bowl favorites, the Packers have a few weaknesses. The defense looks absolutely loaded. Last season, a couple of holes needed addressed, like better defensive tackles and another inside linebacker. Green Bay solved both. Young pieces like Stokes, Walker and Wyatt could struggle early, but when they find their footing, look out.

On offense, the clear weakness is wide receivers. Both Lazard and Watkins can be solid No. 2 receivers, but the Packers are lacking a true No. 1 target. The rookies, Watson and Doubs, must step up.

Packers Forecast

Green Bay avoided losing its most important piece, Rodgers, but Adams’ exit hurts. Seeing how the Packers adjust will be interesting. They could become a team that relies on the run and defense, while Rodgers delivers in the big moments.

Expect the Packers to win the NFC North as big favorites (-175). In a weak NFC, Green Bay could advance far into the playoffs, but defeating the Los Angeles Rams or Tampa Bay Buccaneers looks out of reach.
