2022 NFL Preview: Tennessee Titans

The Tennessee Titans have been a force in the AFC South for the last two seasons. They have 23 wins in that span and show no signs of slowing up. The primary issue that this team has comes when the playoffs hit. They were bounced out early the last two seasons but remain one of the most talented teams in the AFC. This season the Titans are second in the division odds to the Indianapolis Colts in what should be a battle down to the final week.

Tennessee Titans Odds

  • To win AFC South | +165
  • To win AFC | +1400
  • To win Super Bowl | +3300
  • To make playoffs | Yes -110/ No -120

Titans Offense

The Titans have one of the best players in the NFL on offense in Derrick Henry. Even after missing nine games last season with an injury, Henry ran for 937 yards and 10 touchdowns. He has already led the league twice in rushing, and there is no reason to doubt he can do it again. The big question mark on this offense is quarterback Ryan Tannehill. The 34-year-old enters a contract year under a lot of pressure. To make matters worse, wideout A.J. Brown is gone and a lot of powerhouse defenses are on the schedule. If Tannehill continues to regress, he could sink this team fast.

Titans Defense

The Titans’ defense stepped up in a big way last season and finished among the top 10 defenses in several categories. It was a significant improvement over 2020, largely thanks to defensive lineman’s Jeffery Simmons’ emergence. The line combined for 43 sacks, all with fewer blitzes.

Shane Bowen is back at the helm as defensive coordination after improving this squad two years in a row. Their secondary is susceptible to the deep ball, but they have had time to address that. The offense may be the start of the show, but the Titans’ defense is what will win them games.

Titans Team Strength

When you have perhaps the best offensive threat in football, it’s hard to pick anything else as a strength. The offense, in general, is not all that impressive, but Henry makes up for it with his legs. He has the talent to put this entire team on his back and run all over opposing defenses. It doesn’t matter the matchup; when healthy, Henry is the definition of unstoppable. So long as Tannehill doesn’t blow it, this offense could be a one-person wrecking crew again.

Titans Team Weakness

The reason why we can’t list the offense overall as strength is due to Tannehill. We are talking a lot about him here, but he is the starting QB. It’s safe to say that Tannehill regressed in 2021 and won’t have as long of a leash this year to make mistakes. His contract is up, so the team can just cut him in 2023 without repercussions. The receiving corps was bad enough last season. Without Brown, it is questionable at best. Henry can’t do it all, and the Titans will have to rely on Tannehill to regain his 2020 form at some point.

Titans Forecast

It promises to be an exciting 2022 season for the Tennessee Titans. It appears they are preparing to rebuild but still have a roster ready to compete for the AFC. They may have taken a small step back by trading Brown, but that move could pay off soon. Currently, however, we are worried about which direction Tannehill is heading. He’s not getting any younger, and the Titans drafted Malik Willis to possibly replace Tannehill.

The pieces for this team are mostly there, but we feel the Colts will take the AFC South while Tennessee has to wait another season to upgrade.
