2024’s Most Valuable Sports Franchises: Who Tops the Charts?

Forbes Released the 2024 List of the Most Valuable Sports Franchises in the World

Big Teams, Big Bucks

December is the time sites start publishing lists recapping the best (or sometimes the worst) of the last 12 months. Forbes just published its annual list of the most valuable sports franchises in the world.

The top 10 are all US-based teams, and if you’ve ever paid attention to these lists, you can probably guess which team is still No. 1 despite having one of their worst seasons in recent memory.

Let’s take a look at the top five most valuable sports franchises in 2024.

5. New York Knicks ($7.5 Billion)

A lot of hype for the New York Knicks this year, but they have climbed from No. 9 to No. 5 and the second-most valuable NBA team. With a 15-10 record, there are higher playoff expectations after the Knicks’ roster added Karl-Anthony Towns, Mikal Bridges, and OG Anunoby.

If they win their first championship since 1973, Spike Lee should make a documentary about it. He’s only dropped $10M on tickets.

4. New York Yankees ($7.55 Billion)

They fell short in their first World Series appearance since 2009 against the Los Angeles Dodgers (ranked No. 24 at $5.45 billion), but the Steinbrenner family’s New York Yankees are still the most valuable MLB franchise. Aaron Judge had another fantastic year, and the team still ranked No. 1 in attendance in the AL.

3. Los Angeles Rams ($7.6 Billion)

Stanley Kroenke’s Rams are now the second-most valuable NFL franchise as those media deals in California are very lucrative. The Rams will soon have SoFi Stadium to themselves for NFL games as the Chargers prepare to move into their own venue. Sean McVay is currently trying to lead the Rams to the playoffs in consecutive years after a huge win over the 49ers last night.

2. Golden State Warriors ($8.8 Billion)

The team’s recent championship success and the move from Oracle Arena to Chase Center has been very profitable for the highest-ranked NBA team. Steph Curry’s stats are a bit down at 36 years old, but he’s still making fantastic money and hopes to return to the playoffs this year with a team that started 12-3 before a recent 2-7 slump.

1. Dallas Cowboys ($10.1 Billion)

More than half of the top 50 teams are from the NFL, but Jerry Jones’ Dallas Cowboys are the only franchise worth over $10 billion. The Cowboys, ranked No. 1 for the ninth year in a row, are slumping through a 5-8 season. But they still have massive brand recognition and fans will tune in to watch them lose like they did Monday night against the Bengals.

Maybe they can afford some curtains for the stadium.

Honorable Mentions

Finally, here are some franchises on the rise in their valuation:

  • After winning their latest championship, the Boston Celtics have climbed from No. 43 in 2023 to No. 19 this year with a 28% increase to $6 billion as the team looks to repeat this year.
  • The Tampa Bay Buccaneers ($5.4 billion), owned by the Glazer family, had the highest one-year change at 29%, improving to No. 26 as they look to make NFL news with another NFC South title.
  • The highest-ranked team that’s not from the NFL/NBA/MLB is LaLiga’s Real Madrid, which is tied for No. 12 at $6.6 billion.
