While the pointspread opened Rams -3 and floated up to a cheap -3½ by the weekend, late money came for the Niners and they closed as 2½-point home underdogs. They covered wire to wire, absolutely choking the Rams on time of possession, 38 to 22 minutes. Down by 12 in the third quarter, QB Jared Goff pitched an interception in the Niners endzone, all but finishing their comeback hopes.

Bettors jacked the total from its low opening number of 49½ up to 51½ by kickoff. With 27 first-half points on the board it looked like a sharp move, but the second half featured a dozen drives that produced seven punts, one pick, two field goals and a single touchdown. Everything will be fine with the 49ers once they snap whatever magical injury curse was cast on them. (Likely by Vance Joseph.) Gonna be a long week in Foxboro after the New England Patriots were kicked to death by the Denver Broncos.  Those who took the lumber with the Broncos could hardly believe their good fortunes when Patriots’ QB Cam Newton looked completely ordinary. Not even Denver’s atrocious play-calling late in the fourth quarter to throw bomb passes, which resulted in not one but two interceptions, could stop the point-spread cover let alone the straight-up win.
