Bye Week Betting Report: Cardinals, Commanders Ready to Upset?

A pair of underdogs with losing records are the last to go on a bye week. The Arizona Cardinals and Washington Commanders combine to have just seven wins. Their seasons are all but over. However, they may still have something to play for. From a betting perspective, these teams can surprise the NFL betting lines when motivated. It’s just a question of who will be better.

Cardinals Could Play Spoiler as Underdogs

  • Record: 3-10
  • ATS: 7-6-0
  • Point Differential: -101

Despite having just three wins, the Arizona Cardinals have been profitable on the NFL spreads with a 53.9% cover rate. And Arizona’s three victories have come at odds of +470, +110, and +240. This team has not been as brutal as its straight-up record indicates. Still, Arizona is subpar at best and is ranked in the bottom quarter of the league in both offense and defense.

While quarterback Kyle Murray has returned from injury, the team is still missing many key players such as wide receiver Michael Wilson along with a pair of players on the secondary. Marquise “Hollywood” Brown also left the last game with a heel injury.

Arizona will likely continue to be lined as an underdog in its final four games. It has a tough schedule as San Francisco, Philadelphia, and Seattle all look to be playoff teams. The Cardinals could throw a wrench in the plans of any of the three if they can come through as an NFL pick. They already upset Dallas and Pittsburgh. So don’t count this team out.

Can Commanders Salvage Broken Defense?

  • Record: 4-9
  • ATS: 5-7-1
  • Point Differential: -134

The Washington Commanders have been abysmal. And outside of its three minor upset victories, the biggest upset is how head coach Ron Rivera has kept his job. He’s supposedly a defensive guru but Washington is dead last in scoring defense, giving up over 30 a game. Washington heads to the bye on the heels of allowing 45 points in consecutive weeks.

Rivera had one of the shortest Las Vegas NFL odds to be the first head coach to get canned. After he fired defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio, the team seemed to get worse. But he’s somehow even outlasted his old team’s new coach, Frank Reich.

And Washington has had injuries. But they are nowhere near as catastrophic as what some teams have faced. The team is just awful and will be tough to bet online even if it is saddled with wide odds moving forward. It faces the Los Angeles Rams and New York Jets then finishes its season against San Francisco and Dallas. Washington will be a popular team to bet against.

Questions Of The Day

Which of these NFL teams offers the best betting value?

It depends on what Arizona’s and Washington’s betting lines will be. Arizona has been a more profitable team but that is not saying much.

Will any player have a breakout performance after the bye week?

As far as NFL predictions are concerned, any Commander on defense needs to break out. That may still not be enough to improve this terrible unit.
