CFL Week 16 Power Rankings: Stirring the Pot

Upset-Filled Week Shakes Up the Rankings

Week 15 did not disappoint in the CFL: Underdogs swept the week, which has shaken up the Power Rankings. However, we still have the Winnipeg Blue Bombers at the top spot despite getting smacked by the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. Overall, the outright CFL football odds and NFL picks remain similar to previous weeks as we enter another short week.

Where CFL Teams Stand Heading into Week 16

The Bombers have such a long lead on the rest of the CFL that a 17-point loss did not move them down. Of course, the second-placed Calgary Stampeders also lost while the third-place Toronto Argonauts are coming off a bye.

1. Winnipeg Blue Bombers (12-2)

  • Last Week: 1

Winnipeg felt the wrath of a resurgent Dane Evans as the Blue Bombers allowed the most points in the Mike O’Shea era (since 2013). Maybe the Bombers have a habit of looking ahead to the bye as their last loss came before their first off week.

Next Game: vs Saskatchewan Roughriders (6-8) (Week 17)

2. Toronto Argonauts (7-5)

  • Last Week: 3

The Argonauts did not play in Week 15 but moved up thanks to Calgary’s loss. It will be up to Ryan Dinwiddie’s crew to maintain its momentum from a break. The team is 3-2 after a bye week under Dinwiddie as they rematch the Redblacks.

Next Game: at Ottawa Redblacks (3-10)

3. BC Lions (9-3)

  • Last Week: 6

Vernon Adams was solid for the Lions as the team snapped a two-game skid to upset the Stampeders. The Lions continue to be lucrative bets online as they improved to 8-4 against the spread (ATS) and 5-1 ATS on the road. Can they do it again this coming week?

Next Game: vs Calgary Stampeders (8-5)

4. Calgary Stampeders (8-5)

  • Last Week: 2

The Stampeders lost another close one against the Lions. Jake Maier did what he could as he was near-flawless with 301 passing yards and three touchdowns. But in the end, the Lions were a bit better. It’s a tough break but it means the Stamps are now 0-5 against the top two teams in the CFL.

Next Game: at BC Lions (9-3)

5. Montreal Alouettes (5-7)

  • Last Week: 5

Montreal stays put after coming off another bye. It enters the final stretch, where five of its final six games are against division rivals. The team is 0-3 coming off a mid-season bye since Danny Maciocia became the team’s general manager.

Next Game: vs Hamilton Tiger-Cats (4-9)

6. Hamilton Tiger-Cats (4-9)

  • Last Week: 9

Talks of Evans’ demise as a starting quarterback were greatly exaggerated as he returned with a vengeance. Evans isn’t the only Tiger-Cat on the mend. If Hamilton continues to get healthy, this team will be a savvy underdog to bet on the online sportsbook according to the NFL predictions.

Next Game: at Montreal Alouettes (5-7)

7. Saskatchewan Roughriders (6-8)

  • Last Week: 4

Losing to Edmonton has dropped Saskatchewan to two games below .500, the first time since it started 0-2 in the 2019 season. The offensive line gave up eight sacks and made Edmonton’s defense look elite. Saskatchewan needs to get it together as three of its final four games are against Winnipeg and Calgary.

Next Game: at Winnipeg Blue Bombers (12-2)

8. Edmonton Elks (4-10)

  • Last Week: 8

We’re with Taylor Cornelius when he said this team still has a shot at the playoffs. Why not? The odds are against Edmonton as its final three games are against Winnipeg, Toronto, and BC. But if this team can put it together as it did against Saskatchewan, fade it at your own risk.

Next Game: vs Montreal Alouettes (5-7) (Week 17)

9. Ottawa Redblacks (3-9)

  • Last Week: 7

Just when Ottawa seemed to get things going, they’re back at the bottom of the Power Rankings. The competition for the “Second-half Comeback Award” got fiercer with Hamilton and Edmonton winning. The stakes went up for their rematch against Toronto.

Next Game: vs Toronto Argonauts (7-5)
