Could Aaron Rodgers Be the Key to the Steelers’ Seventh Ring?

With Aaron Rodgers Joining the Steelers, Is This the Perfect Opportunity for Pittsburgh’s Seventh Championship Ring?

One Last Run

Aaron Rodgers has been stealing headlines and making NFL news this offseason after signing with the Pittsburgh Steelers in the offseason. But is he the ticket to their Super Bowl salvation this season?

Is This Aaron’s Last Stop?

Aaron Rodgers may be a 4x MVP, but he has only one Super Bowl ring on his finger over his 20 years in the league. And like his talented predecessor, he has left the land that loved him so dearly only to be a gun for hire. Just as Brett Favre vacated Green Bay when Rodgers was champing at the bit to take over, so too has Rodgers departed the frozen tundra of Lambeau after the team drafted Jordan Love to succeed him.

But Aaron’s not ready to call it a career, and he was anointed the Jets’ savior only to injure himself after four offensive snaps and a ripped Achilles in his inaugural season as a Jet. He would return last year, but to no avail, and the Jets would cut him loose. But Aaron Rodgers’ stats from 2024 weren’t bad. He had 3,997 yards with 28 TDs and 11 picks, completing 63% of his passes. Far from legendary but better than most.

And that’s precisely what the Steelers are looking for in a starting quarterback. Better than most. But I’m not sure he’s got a markedly better situation in Pittsburgh. He’s got a decent tight end in Pat Freiermuth and a silky-smooth receiver in DK Metcalf, but that offensive line better be sharp, or this 41-year-old legend will be crappin’ his pants.

Either way, it’s do or die in the Steel City. He’s all out of chances, and if he succeeds in winning a round or two in the postseason, Tomlin will finally get the playoff monkey off his back despite winning a Super Bowl in 2009. Tomlin holds the record for most consecutive non-losing seasons to begin his coaching career with 18, but he is only 5-11 in the playoffs, tossing out the three postseason wins during his Super Bowl season.

The Steelers have not unfurled a championship banner since that magical season over 15 years ago, and if Rodgers doesn’t work this year, both the quarterback and coach will be banished from Pittsburgh. Needless to say, Tomlin has a lot riding on Rodgers, and I’d be surprised if he’s feeling very good about this upcoming year.

Getting Hit Hurts

I’m not an NFL quarterback, but I listen carefully to those who have played the game. I use all the information I can glean to make my NFL playoff predictions and my NFL player props, which are all found in one place. That’s right, if you’re making your NFL picks either now or in the future, check out BetUS for the widest range of pro and college betting options.

Now, with that said, here’s someone who knows a thing or two about the mental and physical devolution that occurs to all NFL quarterbacks. He is former Packers’ linebacker Brady Poppinga, and he shared some very insightful observations regarding Rodgers and the quarterback he’s become.

On a recent podcast he stated, “I went to the Jets-Patriots game last year, and the thing that was sticking out about Aaron that was different was simply, it’s almost this unwillingness — I wouldn’t say unwillingness, because he’s tough — it’s almost like the body is tired and doesn’t want to take the hit. There’s a lot of flinching, and there’s a lot of, I would say, his vision is going from reading the field to the rush, which isn’t usually normal for high-level quarterbacks.

High-level quarterbacks are kind of able to feel the rush, and then they’re able to then keep their eyes downfield.”

BetUS has NFL odds for the over/under for Rodgers’ passing yards at 3,250 ½ as of this writing. If I were you, I’d be betting the bank on the under and watching Rodgers melt down in the Steel City this season.
