Eagles vs Chiefs Super Bowl History: Kansas City Goes For Three-Peat

The Kansas City Chiefs are a slight favorite in our Super Bowl LIX odds to become the first team to win three straight Super Bowls when they face the Philadelphia Eagles on Feb.9 in New Orleans.

The Chiefs have won three of their four Super Bowl games this decade, including wins over the Eagles and San Francisco in the past two seasons. Kansas City is the first team to make a Super Bowl after winning two in a row.

Philadelphia will play in their third Super Bowl in eight seasons, including a 41-33 win over New England in the 2017-18 finale as a 4.5-point underdog on NFL betting lines.

Eagles vs Chiefs Super Bowl Stories 2024-25

1. Chiefs History: First Four, Last Six

Kansas City was one of two teams to reach half of the first four Super Bowls, and it took another 50 years before the Chiefs could add to that.

The first Super Bowl was played on January 15, 1967, as Kansas City represented the unheralded AFL against the powerful Green Bay Packers in Los Angeles. It didn’t go well for the Chiefs, who took a 35-10 beating.

Three years later, Kansas City was at the top of the mountain as Hall of Famer Jan Stenerud booted three field goals. The Chiefs capped a 23-7 upset win over Minnesota with Len Dawson’s 46-yard TD pass to Otis Taylor. KC was a 13.5-point underdog in Super Bowl odds and picks.

Then, came Patrick Mahomes. The 10th pick in the 2017 draft led the Chiefs to the AFC Championship Game in 2018-19 before losing to Tom Brady and the New England Patriots in overtime.

Since then, Mahomes has taken Kansas City to the AFC Championship Game every season – losing only once to Cincinnati three years ago. Mahomes is 3-1 in Super Bowls, losing only to Brady and Tampa Bay. He was MVP in every win – two versus San Francisco.

The Chiefs are one of eight teams to win back-to-back Super Bowls. But a victory on Feb. 9 in The Big Easy will set them apart.

2. One Golden Moment for Eagles

This will be the fifth appearance in the Super Bowl for Philadelphia and it took a great performance by a backup quarterback to win their only championship.

Nick Foles took over for injured Carson Wentz and threw for 373 yards along with three scores as the Eagles beat Brady and New England 41-33 in Minneapolis to cap the 2017-18 season. Foles also caught a TD pass in the triumph.

Wentz is now the backup quarterback for the Chiefs.

The Eagles made the Super Bowl for the first time in 1980-81 as quarterback Ron Jaworski, running back Wilbert Montgomery and receiver Harold Carmichael lost to the Oakland Raiders 27-10.

Philadelphia waited another two-plus decades to reach the big game again in 2004-05. Quarterback Donovan McNabb threw three TD passes, but also had three interceptions in a 24-21 loss to New England that beat the NFL spread (Patriots -7).

A second Super Bowl title would mean a lot after losing in the first round of the playoffs last season. It would also avenge a bitter last-second loss to the Chiefs two years ago.

3. Rematch Of Super Bowl 57 Classic

The Eagles looked like the obvious Super Bowl betting pick two years ago with a 24-14 lead at halftime. Jalen Hurts threw for one score and ran for two others.

However, the Chiefs adjusted on defense and Mahomes led his team back. He threw short TD passes to Kadarius Toney and Skyy Moore in the fourth quarter to give Kansas City the lead, but Hurts ran for a score and a two-point conversion to tie it 35-35.

Mahomes drove the Chiefs down for Harrison Butker’s winning field goal with 8 seconds left. Aside from Mahomes, Travis Kelce recorded six catches for 81 yards and a score for the Chiefs.
