Faves to Fade: 3 Teams to Avoid in NFL Week 1

In the words of lifelong Kansas City Chiefs fan Taylor Swift, haters gonna hate, hate, hate. We’re taking a look at the NFL odds for Week 1 and doing just that. Well, sort of – we are looking for favorites to fade during the opening week of NFL football.

Some of these fades are a result of their spunky opponents. We’re looking at you, Carolina. At the risk of owner David Tepper coming to my house, we’re going to explain why you should be bullish on the Panthers this season. See Tepper, it wasn’t that bad.

The Ravens are going to be motivated for revenge after losing to the Chiefs in the AFC Championship Game. Baltimore also has a shiny new toy to show off in Derrick Henry.

Duuuuuvallll! That’s right, the Jacksonville Jaguars are looking to lay claim to the AFC South title that the franchise lost to the Houston Texans last season. Keep an eye on Trevor Lawrence and the Jags in 2024.

Here are three faves to fade in NFL Week 1.

1. Jaguars at Dolphins (-3½)

Who doesn’t love a good Mike McDaniel press conference? Our favorite capri-wearing NFL head coach is awesome, but the Miami Dolphins are in for a fight in Week 1.

All indications are Lawrence is back to full strength. This is bad news for Miami and Jacksonville’s upcoming opponents.

Gabe Davis had an inconsistent career in Buffalo, but it is hard to argue with some of the big catches the playmaker made during his Bills tenure. Look for the Florida man to have a strong season catching the rock from Lawrence.

The Jaguars have a strong chance to pull off an upset as 3½-point dogs in Miami.

2. Ravens at Chiefs (-2½)

To paraphrase that old quote, “ It’s hard to stay hungry when you are sleeping on satin sheets.” The Chiefs are no stranger to these NFL season openers where typically their shiny new Super Bowl banner is raised.

Kansas City will do this again but there is a major difference this season as the team faces a Baltimore team that lost to the Chiefs in the AFC title game. Wouldn’t it make the Ravens feel a little better to pull off an upset?

We saw the Chiefs stumble against the Lions in Week 1 last season. Expect a repeat performance against the Ravens as these two teams open up the NFL season.

3. Panthers at Saints (-5)

I’m really not feeling the New Orleans Saints this season, and it feels like we are counting down until we have a new head coach in NOLA. The Saints made a few intriguing moves like the additions of Chase Young and Willie Gay.

Yet, none of these moves move the needle on a team that was middle of the pack last season. The Saints were able to snag nine wins last season by taking advantage of the mediocre NFC South.

Here’s the problem. This conference has improved, namely the Falcons and Panthers. New Orleans is going to get an up-close look at that when the Panthers head into the Superdome in Week 1.

Don’t be surprised to look down at that Week 1 ticker and see the Panthers have pulled off an upset as 5-point underdogs.
