Pederson Era Begins

It’s the dawn of a new era for the Jacksonville Jaguars with new head coach Pederson. He will be making his first appearance on the sidelines since being fired by the Philadelphia Eagles at the end of the 2020 season.

He brings a wealth of head coaching experience from his years in the City of Brotherly Love, which were highlighted by winning Philadelphia’s first-ever Super Bowl championship at the close of the 2017-18 season. Pederson was also credited for developing a young Carson Wentz into an MVP candidate by his second season and coaching up journeyman quarterback,Nick Foles into a world champion.

Thus, the bar is raised for the Jaguars after they whimpered to a woeful 3-14-0 mark in 2021. That’s partly due to Pederson’s lofty standards in the game. As well, partly down to general manager Trent Baalke’s offseason moves to improve the roster around Trevor Lawrence, the No. 1 overall pick of the 2021 draft.

For the first time in a long time, there is true excitement about the Jaguars’ prospects and the team should give fans something to cheer about. Still, there are bound to be growing pains in their first year.

So, how many wins will they rack up in 2022? Find out as we serve up our way too early game-by-game predictions. As usual, we’d like to remind you that these are very early picks, so don’t go betting the farm on them.

Jacksonville Jaguars Game-by-Game Predictions

  • Week 1 at Washington Commanders – Sunday, Sept. 11, 2022, 1 p.m. ET

With Pederson coaching the Jaguars and Carson Wentz quarterbacking the Commanders, this game is all of a sudden more interesting as a result of their past connection in Philadelphia. Another backstory to this matchup is the Jaguars upsetting the Wentz-led Indianapolis Colts in Week 18. Thereby knocking Indianapolis out of the playoffs and likely precipitating the events that led to the Wentz trade to Washington. Inasmuch as Wentz is a bit of a wild card in his first game with his new team, one has to consider the fact that the Commanders are a more established under Ron Rivera. Add home-field advantage and Washington should have the edge.

  • Week 2 vs Indianapolis Colts – Sunday, Sept. 18, 2022, 1 p.m. ET

As mentioned above, the Jaguars quashed Indianapolis’ hope of a playoff appearance in 2021. Payback might be on the cards for Frank Reich, who, incidentally, is very familiar with Pederson’s style, having spent time in Philadelphia until the Eagles’ Super Bowl victory. On the flip side, it’s worth noting that the Colts haven’t won in Jacksonville since 2014. So, that’s something the Jaguars might be hanging their hats on. All told, this is a tossup for NFL picks.

    • Prediction: Loss
    • Record: 0-2
  • Week 3 at Los Angeles Chargers – Sunday, Sept. 25, 2022, 4:05 p.m. ET

The LA Chargers are the vogue NFL pick this year in various NFL betting markets. This is a team whose stock is on the rise and that has everything to do with third-year quarterback, Justin Herbert, who’s played lights out ever since he first stepped onto the field. The Chargers should be better than they were in 2021 after bolstering their defense and secondary in the offseason, namely bringing in Khalil Mack.

    • Prediction: Loss
    • Record: 0-3
  • Week 4 at Philadelphia Eagles – Sunday, Oct. 2, 2022, 1 p.m. ET

It’s likely to be an emotional return to the City of Brotherly Love for Pederson. It’s where he enjoyed his highest highs as a coach, delivering the Eagles’ first-ever Lombardi Trophy. It’s also where he endured his lowest lows as he was summarily dismissed three seasons later. Pederson obviously would love to win this this game just to prove a point. All we know right now is that the Eagles are better than the Jaguars.

    • Prediction: Loss
    • Record: 0-4
  • Week 5 vs Houston Texans – Sunday, Oct. 9, 2022, 1 p.m. ET

The Texans swept the 2021 season series with the Jaguars, though very little separated them in the end as both finished at the bottom of the league’s table. On paper, this is a “winnable” game that either team could win. As such, it’s a toss-up for NFL picks.

    • Prediction: Win
    • Record: 1-4
  • Week 6 at Indianapolis Colts – Sunday, Oct. 16, 2022, 1 p.m. ET

Not unlike the Colts’ struggles in Jacksonville, the Jaguars haven’t won at Lucas Oil Stadium in forever. Then again, winning was a foreign concept for this lot – only last season did they snap a 20-game losing streak (second-longest in Super Bowl era) last season when they beat the Miami Dolphins in Week 6.

    • Prediction: Loss
    • Record: 1-5
  • Week 7 vs New York Giants – Sunday, Oct. 23, 2022, 1 p.m. ET

Not unlike the Jaguars, the Giants are debuting new personnel in 2022. Unlike the Jaguars, the Giants aren’t sure about their starting quarterback, Daniel Jones, who has struggled in his first three seasons. If this comes down to quarterback play, Lawrence should underscore his top credentials.

  • Week 8 vs Denver Broncos – Sunday, Oct. 30, 2022, 9:30 a.m. ET (London)

The Jaguars’ annual trip to London features a date with the Russell-Wilson-inspired Broncos this year. If the Broncos live up to their lofty expectations, this will be a tough matchup for the Jags at Wembley Stadium.

    • Prediction: Loss
    • Record: 2-6
  • Week 9 vs Las Vegas Raiders – Sunday, Nov. 6, 2022, 1 p.m. ET

Although the Raiders have improved in various areas this offseason – hiring new head coach Josh McDaniels and acquiring wide receiver Davante Adams, for instance – it’s interesting to note that the bookmakers aren’t totally sold on them. As such, under any other circumstance, the Jaguars might have fancied their chances. However, after a long-haul trip from across the pond, the odds might be stacked against them.

    • Prediction: Loss

  • Week 10 at Kansas City Chiefs – Sunday, Nov. 13, 2022, 1 p.m. ET

Two words: Patrick Mahomes. Another two: Arrowhead Stadium. Three more words: Kansas City Chiefs. Need one say more?

  • Week 11: Bye

  • Week 12 vs Baltimore Ravens, Sunday, Nov. 27, 2022, 1 p.m. ET

Every so often, there is a game that defies logic. It happened last season when the Jaguars stunned the Bills in a 9-6 slugfest. This could be that kind of game this season. For all the hype and buzz surrounding the Ravens, their offense is a bit one-dimensional. Well, it’s been so in recent seasons! And teams are figuring out how to play against Lamar Jackson.

    • Prediction: Win
    • Record: 3-8
  • Week 13 vs Detroit Lions, Sunday, Dec. 4, 2022, 1 p.m. ET

Jared Goff’s first year with the Lions was a forgettable one. However, he didn’t have a lot to work with, even though head coach Dan Campbell did his best to motivate and inspire the team to punch above its weight class. The Lions made substantial improvements in the offseason and these should help Goff in his second year in Motown.

    • Prediction: Loss
    • Record: 3-9
  • Week 14 at Tennessee Titans, Sunday, Dec. 11, 2022, 1 p.m. ET

The Titans swept this series in 2022, outscoring the Jaguars 57-19. This time last season, the Titans steamrolled the Jaguars 20-0 in Nashville.

  • Week 15 vs Dallas Cowboys, Sunday, Dec. 18, 2022, 1 p.m. ET

Pederson’s experience against the Cowboys from his years in the NFC East will be useful. Will it lead to an unlikely upset? Probably not.

    • Prediction: Loss
    • Record: 3-11
  • Week 16 vs New York Jets, Thursday, Dec. 22, 2022, 8:15 p.m. ET

The Jets defeated the Jaguars last year with Zach Wilson triumphing over Trevor Lawrence in the battle of the top two draft picks. Lawrence could get payback this time around. However, the Jets might be even better this year than they were last year.

    • Prediction: Loss
    • Record: 3-12
  • Week 17 vs Houston Texans, Sunday, Jan. 1, 2023, 1 p.m. ET

The Texans swept the series with the Jaguars last season. This year, they could split the series with each side winning at home.

    • Prediction: Loss
    • Record: 3-13
  • Week 18 vs Tennessee Titans, Sunday, Jan. 8, 2023, 1 p.m. ET

Under most circumstances, the Titans are winning this game. However, there are a few scenarios that would allow a Jaguars win – one of which is in the case of Tennessee resting starters for the playoffs. So, in some respects, this game is a bit of a toss-up.

Jacksonville Jaguars Regular Season Win Total Betting Verdict:

The Jacksonville Jaguars improved on paper. But games aren’t played on paper, as we all know. So, we’re predicting the Jaguars will play better. But as their wins will be few and far between, cracking a win total of six isn’t on the cards. We’ve got the Jaguars finishing 3-14-0 again – with a potential high of four or five wins.
