Kirk Cousins vs Baker Mayfield Heats Up NFC South Race!

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are the defending NFC South champs but find themselves as underdogs in the division heading into 2024. After an offseason of headlines, the Atlanta Falcons are sizable favorites in our odds to win the NFC South at -125.

The Bucs are next in line at +290 followed by the New Orleans Saints at +350. Finally, the Carolina Panthers are a distant fourth in the NFC South odds at +1400.

For NFC South teams, each squad faces the entire AFC West featuring the Kansas City Chiefs, Denver Broncos, Los Angeles Chargers, and Las Vegas Raiders. Additionally, each team faces one of the following AFC North franchises: Pittsburgh Steelers, Cleveland Browns, Baltimore Ravens, and Cleveland Browns.

In addition to facing divisional opponents twice, the NFC South will also play all of the NFC East teams with upcoming matchups against the Dallas Cowboys, Philadelphia Eagles, Washington Commanders, and New York Giants.

Here’s a look at how the NFC South is shaping up heading into Week 1.

Expectations Rising for Baker Mayfield and Buccaneers

Tampa Bay spent the offseason ensuring Mike Evans and Baker Mayfield were secured for the foreseeable future. The Bucs will not have the advantage of heading into a season with low expectations.

Mayfield was able to lead Tampa Bay to the postseason in his debut season in Florida, wildly exceeding the preseason expectations. The Bucs may not be the favorite, but it will not be a surprise if the team once again wins the division.

If you are looking for the defining point on the Buccaneers’ schedule, a big stretch will occur from Week 7 through Week 10. The Bucs take on the Ravens, Falcons, Chiefs and 49ers. The good news for Tampa Bay is three of these four matchups take place at home.

BetUS Sportsbook has set the Bucs win total over-under at 8 for 2024.

Atlanta Poised to Take Over NFC South With Kirk Cousins

Atlanta turned heads with the selection of quarterback Michael Penix Jr. with the No. 8 pick. Don’t let that distract you from a talented Falcons roster that has a chance to make the playoffs.

Atlanta already had weapons with Kyle Pitts, Drake London, and Bijan Robinson but lacked a quarterback who could get them the rock. This should not be a problem with Kirk Cousins.

The Falcons project to have a favorable end to the regular season schedule with games against the Raiders, Giants, Commanders, and Panthers. It would not be a surprise if Atlanta is favored in these final four games.

Can Saints Overcome Brutal Stretch After Week 1?

If there was ever a season for the Saints to fly under the radar, it would be 2024. Last year the team generated buzz after signing Derek Carr, but the quarterback’s initial season in the NFC was less than ideal.

There is a reason to be concerned that New Orleans will get off to a slow start. The Saints have a brutal beginning stretch after the season opener versus the Panthers. Consider these matchups from Week 2 through Week 6: Cowboys, Eagles, Falcons, Chiefs, and Buccaneers.

Three of these five matchups are on the road. Surprisingly, the Saints’ win total is just ½ game less than the Bucs at 7 ½ when you bet online.

Bryce Young Needs Bounce Back Season With Panthers

It is hard to imagine Bryce Young having a worse season than his rookie year. From Geno Smith to Baker Mayfield, new head coach Dave Canales has success helping quarterbacks play some of the best football of their careers.

Carolina faces a gauntlet after their Week 11 bye. From Week 12 through Week 15, the Panthers face the Chiefs, Bucs, Eagles, and Cowboys.

The Panthers are likely to improve under Canales, but this is unlikely to be a squad that competes for the NFC South title. Carolina’s win total betting line is set at 5½.
