After a 3-13-1 season in Dan Campbell’s first year at the helm of the Detroit Lions, it didn’t appear that a turnaround was in sight. However, the Lions have gone from a laughingstock to a powerhouse under his tenure, steadily improving each year with a 9-8 Lions record in 2022 followed by a 12-5 season last year and a deep run into the postseason before being ousted by the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC Championship game.

Therefore, it wasn’t surprising that free agency took a backseat for a day and Detroit Lions news revolved around Campbell getting a contract extension that will see him as head coach for the organization for the next four years. Brad Holmes, the Lions’ GM, was also handed an extension, keeping the tandem together for the foreseeable future.

“We are thrilled to have Brad and Dan under contract for the next four seasons,” Lions owner Sheila Hamp said in a statement released by the team. “They have been the driving force behind the rebuild of our football team and the success that we have enjoyed. The continuity they provide for our football program will continue to be the key to our future success on the field.”

The duo has been responsible for the football renaissance in Detroit with savvy and strategic moves like dealing hometown hero, Matthew Stafford, to the Rams for Jared Goff and a treasure trove of draft picks. Many fans were not enamored with the trade but it worked out well for both teams as the Rams won a Super Bowl with Stafford while the Lions chose wisely in the draft and have built a formidable squad.

After last season, Campbell was in the running for AP Coach of the Year while Holmes was voted the Pro Football Writers of America NFL Executive of the Year.

Team president and CEO Rod Wood said in a press release, “I could not be more proud of the work that Brad, Dan, and Chris have done for our organization. They have selflessly worked together to build a winning culture within the Lions. I am excited to continue working with them to create the sustained success that we envision for the team, our fans, and the city of Detroit.”
