Los Angeles Chargers at Philadelphia Eagles: Betting Guide

It’s a battle of the sophomore quarterbacks in Philly on Sunday as the skidding Los Angeles Chargers visit the Philadelphia Eagles, who are still technically alive in the NFC playoff race but need to turn this around quickly. Justin Herbert is the reigning NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year and Jalen Hurts is still getting his feet wet as a starter, but both quarterbacks have a ton of talent and make plenty of exciting plays through the air and on the ground.

Head-to-Head

As out-of-conference foes, the Chargers and Eagles only play once every four years. Their last meeting was in 2017, when the Chargers still had Philip Rivers and the Eagles still had Carson Wentz. The Eagles won 26-24 behind four Jake Elliott field goals, an Alshon Jeffery touchdown catch and a Wendell Smallwood touchdown run. The win cut the Chargers’ historical record in the matchup to 7-5.

Last Game

The Chargers couldn’t get much going on offense in the second half against the New England Patriots last Sunday and Herbert threw a crushing pick-six to former Charger Adrian Phillips that gave New England a late lead. The Patriots went on to win 27-24 after Herbert’s second interception of the day. Both he and Mac Jones completed just 18 of their 35 pass attempts, but Herbert’s turnovers gave New England the edge.

Los Angeles lost as 3½-point home favorites, dropping a second straight game and looking rather ordinary on offense a game after the Chargers were completely shut down by the Baltimore Ravens. The point total actually pushed with the over/under (51 points) on a Chargers’ garbage-time score.

Injury Report

Running back Justin Jackson (quad) and cornerbacks Asante Samuel Jr. (concussion) and Michael Davis (hamstring) are all questionable for this weekend. Key linebacker Kenneth Murray Jr. (ankle) and offensive tackle Bryan Bulaga (back) are on injured reserve and won’t be activated in time for the game.

Last Game

The Eagles needed a laugher and, last Sunday against the winless Detroit Lions, they got one. Philadelphia got started early, building a 17-0 halftime lead and scoring 24 more unanswered points in the third and fourth quarters before the Lions got on the board. Hurts only threw for 103 yards, but that’s all he needed to do since the Eagles ran for 236 yards (and four scores) as a team, with the damage split between Hurts, Boston Scott and Jordan Howard.

Philadelphia easily covered as three-point road favorites and the over (48 points) came down to the wire, hitting on an Elliott 48-yard field goal with less than two minutes to play.

Injury Report

Wide receiver Jalen Reagor (ankle) and defensive lineman Javon Hargrave (shoulder) didn’t practice on Wednesday so they’re questionable for Sunday’s game, as are defensive backs Zech McPhearson and Anthony Harris. Running back Miles Sanders is still on injured reserve with an ankle injury.

Betting on the Game

The brakes had to be pumped a bit on the Chargers’ bandwagon the last few weeks as Los Angeles has significantly cooled off following a 4-1 start. Herbert is still an elite quarterback, Brandon Staley still looks like a great hire, and Los Angeles is still set up very well for the future. But, the Chargers are probably not there just yet in terms of competing with the best of the best in the AFC even if the Kansas City Chiefs have taken a big step back.

On the other hand, even with their huge win over the Lions, the Eagles are still rebuilding and Hurts is far from a finished product. However, despite being just 27th in passing yards in the NFL, Philadelphia is third in rushing yards per attempt and sixth in total rushing yards, which could bode well for Nick Sirianni’s team against Los Angeles. The Chargers are dead last in the league in rushing yards per attempt, rushing attempts and total rushing yards allowed. If you’re betting online, look for the Eagles to run all over the Chargers.

Granted, the Chargers have one of the best passing offenses and the Eagles’ pass defense is mediocre at best, so that area of the game might work against Philadelphia. Still, though, at home and with the benefit of not having traded franchise cornerstone Fletcher Cox, the Eagles match up fairly well with Herbert and could be an interesting moneyline pick as far as NFL predictions go.

The line opened at 1½ in the Chargers’ favor and has since moved to Los Angeles -2 on the BetUS Sportsbook, which provides a little more cushion if you’re taking NFL spreads. On paper, the Chargers seem like they should be favored a bit more but they are only 1-2 against teams with winning records and have a lot left to prove.,

The over is a little high and might be worth tracking. These offenses are only in the middle-of-the-pack in terms of scoring.

Final Score: Philadelphia Eagles 27, LA Chargers 21
