McCaffrey to Justify Odds to Lead NFL in Rushing Yards

Christian McCaffrey is the betting favorite to be the NFL rushing yards leader in 2024, and he leads a talented bunch of running backs.

The San Francisco 49ers’ running back has +275 odds to win the rushing title over the likes of Indianapolis’ Jonathan Taylor, Breece Hall of the New York Jets and Saquon Barkley of the Philadelphia Eagles.

NFL odds have McCaffrey firm in the betting market, so he’s the one they need to beat.

Clear Favorite is McCaffrey

Injuries have been the only reason McCaffrey isn’t among the rushing leaders every year, but he showed what he can do in 2023.

He ran for 1,459 yards for the 49ers – nearly 300 yards more than runner-up Derrick Henry – and missed only one game for the NFC champion 49ers.

That’s a sizable margin for the former Stanford standout, who only needs to stay injury free to win the rushing yards title again in 2024.

The 49ers feature McCaffrey often in their rushing attack, and he had 272 carries last season, which ranked second behind only Henry.

Given how many touches he’ll get this time around, we’re not betting against McCaffrey from winning consecutive titles at +275.

It’s a fair price for the best running back in the NFL, who just signed a two-year contract extension worth $38 million.

I think it’s really important,” McCaffrey said. “I think running backs have been undervalued for a long time now and hopefully this is a step in the right direction.”

Contract Negotiations Behind Colts RB Taylor

There’s nothing worse than betting on a player who sits out because of contract negotiations.

It lets down the team, fans and bettors, so it’s good to see Colts running back Jonathan Taylor having locked in a good deal that runs through the 2026 season.

He played only 10 games last season, rushing for 741 yards. However, overlook those numbers as he started the season on the physically unable to perform list and missed the first month

He rushed for 180 yards in his final game, showing what he can achieve when he is put in a featured roll. Many expect Taylor to be back to his best, which saw him lead the league in rushing in 2021. He rushed for 1,811 yards and 18 touchdowns that season.

Taylor had 332 rushing attempts that season, which is an incredible amount, and the Colts could use him that heavily again. However, with only 18 games started in the last two years, that’s where the worry comes in.

Bettors get +600 odds for Taylor to win the rushing title, which is an excellent price for the second favorite.

Improvement for Jets RB Hall

Expectations are high for Breece Hall, who is the third favorite at +700.

While he rushed for only 994 yards for the New York Jets last season, natural improvement should see him rush over 1,000 yards comfortably.

Hall is on the same betting line as Barkley, so our sportsbook believes Hall will be one of the top four rushers in the NFL.

He’s not a finished product like McCaffrey and Taylor, but that’s where the excitement comes from for Hall, entering his third season. He has maturing to do, and if he continues to improve, he could be one of the best running backs in the league.

Given how much fun it could be to watch him for the Jets, he’s worth backing at +700.

Williams Could Ram it Home

Los Angeles Rams RB Kyren Williams finished third last season with 1,144 rushing yards, and he did it on 228 attempts.

That’s significantly less than McCaffrey and Henry. He had 44 fewer rushes than McCaffrey, so if the Rams feed him the ball a little more, he could challenge for the league lead.

Betting markets have him at +1100, which is a bit insulting for his talent. Sure, the Rams played better than expected across the board, but there’s no reason why Williams can’t have another big year.

He also rushed 12 touchdowns, the same as Henry, so he’s a dynamic back and well worth backing.
