New York Jets Sign Aaron Glenn as New Head Coach

Call It a Home Coming in New York After Jets Sign Former Team Star and Lions DC Aaron Glenn

Aaron Glenn Is Back Home

New York Jets fans get the chance to truly go berserk and collectively positively lose their sh*t. For a team that’s usually deemed a perennial dumpster fire, finding a moment of bliss and joy has become almost as hard as trying to make it to the Super Bowl.

But in the words of Ru Paul’s Drag Race legend Bianca Del Rio, “Not Today Satan.

Announced by all major NFL news sites, Aaron Glenn, former Defensive Coordinator for the Detroit Lions, was hired by the New York Jets, the team who drafted Glenn back in 1994 and with which he became a star, to be their new head coach, thus finally squashing the doubt of who the next Jets coach should be.

Glenn now joins another former Detroit coordinator, Ben Johnson, landing a head coaching gig this offseason following Johnson’s hiring by the Chicago Bears.

Celebrated by various former Jets players and legends, as well as current roster stars and football fans, it’s safe to say that the feeling around Florham Park is one of hope and optimism.

Having a coach like Glenn, who is not only respected by players and other coaches around the league but also a home-grown talent, gives an entirely different kind of vibe to a team that, for seasons, has felt lifeless.

Who’s Looking Best to Join Glenn’s Staff?

With not even 24 hours have passed since the Jets announced Glenn as their new HC, the NFL rumors carousel has started to pop off, offering the names of various potential coaches and coordinators who would shape up the team’s new coaching staff.

Considering Glenn’s defensive background, many echoes have been made about how NY’s new coach would be looking to make up his new staff with a mix of young, explosive, offensive-driven minds and veteran, defense-strong candidates with previous head coaching experience to make up his staff.

With this said, on offense, guys like LA Rams tight ends coach and pass game coordinator Nick Caley, alongside Lions QB coach (and former Jets player) Mark Brunnell and Denver Broncos pass game coordinator John Morton, are leading the race for the Offensive Coordinator job.

Defensively, former San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator Steve Wilks, with previous head coaching experience, would be Glenn’s preferred choice for DC.

One thing is sure: Glenn wants a staff of coaches and coordinators who genuinely understand his vision and values.

Considering the coach’s “no BS” attitude, where accountability is held in the highest regard and 100% is the bare minimum effort allowed, whoever he ends up choosing will have to be ready to run through a brick wall with him and the players, go to war, win football games and make the Jets a team to fear of in opponents NFL schedule.

What Will NY Do About the Other Aaron…Rodgers?

And now we get to the big, giant, ayahuasca-taking elephant in the room. What will happen with Aaron Rodgers now that Glenn is the head coach?

If I had a dime for all the different betting odds I’ve seen floating around about Rodgers potentially retiring, I’d have a nice wad of cash ready to bet on whether No.8 calls it a career.

But honestly, thinking about this whole ordeal from a rational point of view, and considering that the Jets don’t hold a premier position in the upcoming NFL Draft to take a top-tier franchise QB in the making or have enough credit to snag up another veteran QB like Rodgers to start over, keeping Aaron for one more season at least could do more good than harm.

From the looks of it, Glenn has already been heard talking about how he wouldn’t be opposed to keeping Rodgers for at least one more season.

If you look back at Rodgers’ stats this past season, he still put up numbers that have him atop the league’s upper tier of QBs. Yes, the team looked like a hot mess more times than necessary. At times, the first person every NFL picks and predictions fan wanted to blame was him, but would it really hurt that much to run it back with Rodgers and company now that Glenn is taking over?

Seriously, with a team like the Jets, what’s the worst that could happen?
