Even though it’s just the first game of the season, there have been some major shifts in my Super Bowl 59 odds and predictions that you’ll want to see. This update should be your guide to making bets for future weeks.

So, take a seat and let’s dive into who’s making moves and who’s taking a tumble after Week 1

6 Top Contenders for NFC Super Bowl Rankings

1. San Francisco 49ers (+600)

Last Week: 1

I’m sure you read the title right, and no, I wasn’t kidding. The San Francisco 49ers easily hold the top spot in my rankings so far. They returned this season with a nearly identical offense and it showed, picking up right where they left off last season by crushing the New York Jets 32-19.

Brock Purdy did what Brock Purdy does, throwing for 231 yards and connecting with one of his four top-tier receivers: George Kittle, Brandon Aiyuk, Deebo Samuel or Jauan Jennings. Anyone who really knows the NFL knew the Jets had no chance of containing this explosive 49ers offense.

Defensively, San Francisco matched the offense’s intensity by shutting down Aaron Rodgers, keeping him under 200 passing yards and forcing him into an interception. Like a horse out of the gate, San Francisco snapped right back into place and hit the ground running against New York. They were in sync in every aspect, leaving little doubt about their spot at the top of my rankings.

2. Philadelphia Eagles (+1200)

Last Week: 2

The ‘Birds may have gone the distance with Green Bay in their season opener in Brazil, but they’re still one of the most offensively lethal teams in the league — right up there with San Francisco and Kansas City. Like the 49ers, the Philadelphia Eagles kicked their offensive game plan into high gear, dominating on all fronts.

Jalen Hurts threw for 278 yards, Saquon Barkley rushed for 109 yards and scored three TDs while A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith had standout performances as well.

But here’s the kicker: The Philly defense gave up a whopping 414 yards to the Packers — more than the Eagles’ offense managed to gain. Major red flag. Yes, safety Reed Blankenship did grab an interception off Packers QB Jordan Love, but that’s far from enough. If the Eagles can’t tighten up their defense and get things under control, they might face another embarrassing playoff exit. For now, their offense is firing on all cylinders, which keeps them high in my predictions for Super Bowl.

3. Detroit Lions (+1100)

Last Week: 3

Alright, it was a close call for the third spot between the Lions and the Rams, but since the Detroit Lions won their Week 1 matchup, it only makes sense to give it to them. Detroit came ready to play, diving right back into the fray with a solid performance against the Rams.

Even though WR Amon-Ra St. Brown didn’t rack up big receiving yards, Jared Goff remained unfazed. He found a way to make things work, connecting with Jameson Williams for 121 yards and a touchdown. But really, the game ball should go to running back David Montgomery, who steamrolled the LA defensive line and scored the game-winning touchdown in overtime.

Defensively, I wouldn’t be quick to label the Lions much improved defensively from last season. However, they did create some havoc for Matt Stafford and the Rams’ offense, making key stops in the red zone quite a few times. Keep an eye on the Lions – they could quite possibly become your best friend for your NFL futures betting.

4. Los Angeles Rams (+3500)

Last Week: 4

It’s no surprise to see the Rams’ odds shift from +3000 to +3500 since our last NFC power rankings piece. But don’t just write them off yet. Matt Stafford and the Rams came to play in the Motor City and it looked like they had the game in their grasp for a good chunk of time. However, they couldn’t quite seal the deal in the red zone.

Credit is due to the Lions’ defense, but penalties were a major setback for Los Angeles. The Los Angeles Rams were flagged for a handful of holding calls that might have changed the outcome of their season opener against Detroit.

As for their playstyle, not much has changed. Stafford threw for 317 yards, Kyren Williams rushed for a touchdown, and veteran receiver Cooper Kupp added another 100+ yard game to his career stats.

What can I say? Los Angeles is still a good team, no doubt about it. But I expect them to drop further down my list as the season continues. They have star power and plenty of experience, including Super Bowl experience, but I’m not convinced Matt Stafford can lead the Rams to another Super Bowl title, especially if they can’t beat the Lions. Let’s see what happens down the road.

5. Dallas Cowboys (+1400)

Last Week: 7

You guys are lucky how much I enjoy what I do. As a Giants fan, writing about the Eagles and the Dallas Cowboys in one article is like having to sit through a family dinner with your two least favorite relatives. Awkward but necessary.

We didn’t know what to expect from Dallas in its first game of the year against Cleveland, but boy, did the Cowboys make a statement. The Cowboys’ defensive line and linebacker unit of DeMarvion Overshown, Eric Hendricks and DeMarcus Lawrence were relentless, combining for five sacks and eight quarterback hits. This Dallas defense alone has pushed the Cowboys to the forefront as a favorite for NFL odds and picks among bettors in the coming weeks.

The score might have finished 33-17 in favor of the Cowboys, but the stats tell a different story. Dak Prescott was sacked three times and threw for only 179 yards with one touchdown pass. For someone making $60 million per year over four years, I’d expect better passing numbers, especially with reliable receivers like veteran Brandin Cooks and CeeDee Lamb on his roster.

The Cowboys need to show me a lot more if they want to stand out among NFC contenders as a top-three Super Bowl 59 contender and win it all. They earned this spot solely because of their defensive performance. Without their relentless pressure on the ball, they’d be sitting outside my top six.

6. New Orleans Saints (+8000)

Last Week: 12

Don’t choke on your coffee while reading this, but yeah, I’ve got the New Orleans Saints sliding into the sixth spot of my NFC rankings. They were fantastical against the Panthers, though, let’s be honest, every team looks great against the Panthers.

Derek Carr looked much more like the quarterback we hoped for, throwing three touchdown passes and totaling 200 yards. And we can’t overlook veteran Alvin Kamara, who rushed for 83 yards and a touchdown.

Adding to that, the Saints’ defense brought the heat at the Caesars Superdome, forcing Panthers QB Bryce Young into two interceptions and sacking him four times. Obviously, we need to temper our excitement a bit since the Panthers are, well, not great. But still, the Saints came in with a chip on their shoulder, manhandling Carolina in a 47-10 win.

However, like the Cowboys, I’m not sure the Saints can keep this pace all season. With an aging roster and a less experienced receiving corps, they might face challenges in the coming weeks. But for now, they’ve earned this spot.
