NFC Super Bowl Rankings: Eagles Solidify Standing at Top Spot for Bettors

Week 9 of the NFL season has come and gone, which means we have reached the halfway point of the 2023 campaign. Last week, we saw the defending NFC Champion Philadelphia Eagles claim the top spot in our NFC Super Bowl rankings away from the San Francisco 49ers. The 49ers lost three straight games before their bye in Week 9, and the Eagles soared to the top of the rankings.

Every NFC team has had its ups and downs in the first half of the season, and the Eagles are no exception. Philadelphia has simply been the most consistent in the NFC, thanks in large part to the play of Jalen Hurts and AJ Brown. Once the market allows it, one of the best Super Bowl player prop bets might be for Brown to win Super Bowl MVP – he entered Week 9 with a record six straight games with at least 125 receiving yards.

The Eagles own the best record in the NFL at 8-1 and are winners of three straight games. They cruised past the Miami Dolphins in Week 7 and followed it up with a comeback win over the Washington Commanders on the road. Week 9 presented the Eagles with their toughest challenge yet this season, and they came out victorious over the Dallas Cowboys. Philadelphia has planted its flag as the top NFC contender once again.

Meanwhile, the Detroit Lions were on a bye in Week 9, and the NFC West-leading Seattle Seahawks were crushed by the Baltimore Ravens. The NFC is clearly not as deep as the AFC, but there are a few teams that are true Super Bowl contenders in 2023.

There has been plenty of movement in our NFL Super Bowl odds as we reach the halfway point this season. Let’s break down the latest NFC Super Bowl rankings ahead of Week 10. Who is the favorite to represent the Conference in the 2024 Super Bowl at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas on Feb. 11, 2024?

1. Philadelphia Eagles (+550) Statement Win Solidifies Super Bowl 58 Odds

(Last Week 1, + 550)

It’s now clear the Eagles own the top spot in NFC Super Bowl rankings. Philadelphia has usurped the 49ers, and the current Super Bowl odds are suggesting a rematch from last season between the Kansas City Chiefs and Eagles. The Eagles own the best record in the NFL at 8-1, but they have made things interesting in a handful of those wins.

Jalen Hurts and AJ Brown have been dynamic. Hurts completed 17 of 23 passes for 207 yards and two touchdowns in the 28-23 victory over the Dallas Cowboys. One week after AJ Brown set the record for consecutive games with at least 125 receiving yards, he finished with 7 catches for 66 yards and a touchdown. He has been an unstoppable force.

The Eagles defense struggled again despite the win. A week after Philadelphia allowed the Washington Commanders to score 31 points, they nearly allowed the Cowboys to march down the field and beat them late in the fourth quarter. The Eagles’ secondary is clearly an issue, as they allowed Dak Prescott to throw for 374 yards and three touchdowns. The Eagles’ strength is in the trenches though. Their run defense is the best in the NFL, and they also own the best offensive line. Philadelphia has an advantage over every opponent in those positions, and it shows each week.

Jalen Hurts appeared to suffer an injury to his left knee late in the first half, but somehow he managed to avoid anything serious. Hurts is very stoic, so it’s difficult to know if the injury truly affected him. The “Brotherly Shove” or “Tush Push” was used after the hit to his knee, so it’s a good sign for Hurts moving forward. The good news is he’ll have a week to recover from anything he’s ailing from.

The Eagles gauntlet schedule continues when they return from their bye-week blues. In Week 11, we’ll witness the highly anticipated Super Bowl rematch with the Chiefs on Monday Night Football. After that, Philadelphia will battle the Buffalo Bills, 49ers, and Cowboys again.

2. San Francisco 49ers (+600) Bye Week, No Movement in Super Bowl 58 Odds

(Last Week 2, + 600)

The 49ers began to see their Super Bowl lines fall after their first loss in Week 6 to the Cleveland Browns. It was Brock Purdy’s first loss as a starter in the regular season. The 49ers’ 15-game win streak was snapped, and since then, Purdy has lost two more in a row, and the 49ers have failed to get in the win column with their record falling to 5-3. The 49ers bye could not have come at a better time.

The 49ers’ loss against the Browns in Week 6 was close, but their loss to the Minnesota Vikings in Week 7 showed there were chinks in the armor. In Week 8, the Cincinnati Bengals thrashed them, and the 49ers limped into their bye week. The 49ers haven’t scored more than 17 points in three straight games, which marks the longest streak since Kyle Shanahan became the Head Coach.

Running back Christian McCaffrey will be looking to set the all-time record for consecutive games with a touchdown in Week 10. McCaffrey has scored in 17 straight games as a 49er, and he is currently tied with Lenny Moore, who did the same back in 1963-64. McCaffrey remains the highest non-QB in NFL MVP future odds at +1600. Before Week 4, he was +4800 to win MVP, and now he has just seven quarterbacks ahead of him.

The 49ers are expected to get All-Pro left tackle Trent Williams and star wide receiver Deebo Samuel back in the lineup. At the trade deadline last week, the 49ers acquired former 2nd-overall pick Chase Young to add to its already incredible defense. The 49ers defensive line will cause mayhem for every opponent in the second half of the season.

The 49ers will kick off the second half of their season on the road. They face a difficult matchup against the red-hot Jacksonville Jaguars and Trevor Lawrence, who will also be coming off a bye in Week 10.

3. Dallas Cowboys (+1000) Holding Steady in Super Bowl 58 Odds

(Last Week 3, + 1000)

Where do I begin with the Cowboys? Dallas’ Super Bowl 58 odds remain stagnant at 10 to 1 despite their loss to the Eagles. The Cowboys ultimately lost the game, but I think they impressed people around the NFL with their performance. The Cowboys fell to 5-3, but they didn’t lose this tough road showdown like they did against the 49ers in Week 5.

Dak Prescott played exceptionally well and even had Dallas in position to score a potential winning touchdown after the Cowboys moved the ball 86 yards in just 46 seconds late in the fourth quarter. Dallas reached the 6-yard line, but a sack and a penalty pushed them back to the 27-yard line with minimal time remaining. It was a game of inches for the Cowboys. Early in the fourth quarter, the Cowboys thought they scored a touchdown to make it a one-score game, but after replay, it was overturned on the one-inch line! The Cowboys eventually scored a touchdown, and Prescott ran in a 2-point conversion where replay overturned again in favor of the Eagles as Prescott stepped out of bounds by inches. A game of inches for Dallas. The story would look very different if some of those replays went their way. I believe the grit and closeness of the loss is the reason the Cowboys’ Super Bowl 58 odds haven’t worsened.

The Cowboys return home next week, where they have been incredible, winning 11 straight games at AT&T Stadium (Jerry World). Dak Prescott played fantastic despite the loss, completing 29 of 44 passes for 374 yards and three touchdowns. CeeDee Lamb stayed hot, reeling in 11 passes for 191 yards.

The Cowboys didn’t walk away with the win, but I believe they made a statement to the rest of the NFL in Week 9. Dallas has an extremely soft schedule coming up when they host the New York Giants in Week 10, followed by a matchup with the Carolina Panthers.

4. Detroit Lions (+1400) Climbing Back in Super Bowl 58 Odds

(Last Week 4, + 1400)

The Detroit Lions’ Super Bowl 58 odds are right back to where they were before their loss to the Baltimore Ravens in Week 7. The Lions bounced back on Monday Night Football in Week 8 with a convincing 26-14 victory over the Las Vegas Raiders. The Lions held a streak of scoring at least 20 points in 15 straight games that ended in Baltimore, but they quickly started a new streak in Week 8.

Detroit sits at 6-2 as we enter the back half of the season, and they hold a commanding lead in the NFC North. Detroit is looking to host its first-ever playoff game at Ford Field later this season. The Lions will likely get David Montgomery back in Week 10, but their first-round pick Jahmyr Gibbs made his presence known in the Motor City. Gibbs accounted for 189 total yards in Week 8 and announced his arrival to Lions fans in a big way. Detroit is poised to make a deep run in the NFC playoffs in 2023.

The Lions have won 14 of their last 18 games overall, and coming off of their bye, they will travel to Los Angeles to take on the Chargers. The Chargers just played on Monday night and will be traveling back out West for a short week, while the Lions have had ample time to rest and prepare. I expect the Lions to come out roaring against the Chargers’ defense which is allowing the most passing yards per game in the NFL.
