There have been NFL rumors about Donald retiring for a couple of years now so this isn’t a huge surprise but it’s a huge deal nonetheless. The 10-time Pro Bowler is 32 and hasn’t shown serious signs of slowing down. However, there’s not much left for him to accomplish.

Aaron Donald has a Hall of Fame Resume

Donald is retiring as one of the most decorated players in NFL history. He went to a Pro Bowl every season and was named Defensive Player of the Year three times. Lawrence Taylor and J. J. Watt are the only other two players to ever win the award three times.

While the individual accomplishments are great, Donald finally got over the hump and won a Super Bowl with the Rams in 2021. There’s not much more for a defensive player to accomplish in a career.

Donald’s 111.0 career sacks are 40th in NFL history and he did that in just 154 NFL games. What makes that number even more impressive is that he played defensive tackle. Most of the all-time sack leaders were/are either defensive ends or outside linebackers.

There’s an argument to be made that Donald isn’t just the greatest defensive tackle of all time but possibly the greatest defensive player ever. He likely could’ve played a few more seasons at a high level but there’s not much left for him to accomplish.

Donald is a lock for the Hall of Fame the second he’s eligible and he will long be remembered as one of the truly great players ever to play football.
