NFL Quarterback Special Odds
A few teams still face big decisions this offseason at the quarterback position. As it is, they are going into the 2022-23 NFL season with a couple (or more options), but no clear answers.
Choosing a quarterback is a big deal for any offense and a decision that’s going to have a lasting impact on the respective team’s campaign. It could mean the difference between a winning and a losing season.
Three teams, in particular, are in this predicament: the Atlanta Falcons, Carolina Panthers and Pittsburgh Steelers. For those bettors looking to weigh in on the possible choices, BetUS has rolled out the market for each team, asking the question which quarterback will start in Week 1?
Read on as we preview this NFL specials market and provide useful betting insight.
Starting Quarterback Week 1 – Atlanta Falcons
As the Atlanta Falcons prepare for a new era without the iconic Matt Ryan, they’re faced with two options: seasoned starter Marcus Mariota and rookie quarterback Desmond Ridder.
Things appear stacked for a quarterback battle and, if the NFL odds were any indication, the likely winner is Mariota. BetUS favors the former Tennessee Titans’ first-round draft pick as the -650 favorite to start.
- Marcus Mariota -650
- Desmond Ridder +375
In fairness, this market outlook makes perfect sense. The Falcons are a rebuilding team under second-year head coach Arthur Smith. Mariota has been around the block since losing his starting gig with the Titans. He spent a few years recently with the Las Vegas Raiders as Derek Carr’s understudy.
Having been in limbo for some time, this is Mariota’s opportunity to showcase his wares. Prove that he can be a starter in the NFL. Options such as these are few and far between.
Trotting around the league, with different teams, coaches and offenses, means Mariota should be quick on the uptake and ready to showcase his talents in this new scheme and offense.
There’s a push to evaluate new talent sooner than later in the NFL. Simply because the seasons are short and there are only a limited number of games with which an organization can determine the real value of its draft class. But, in the case of Mariota vs Ridder, the former is a reliable and steady signal-caller that will play to script.
One expects Riddler will get some playing time at some point in the season. The Cincinnati quarterback is a fascinating prospect, having left the Bearcats as the third-winningest quarterback in college football history. But there’s an advantage to letting him learn behind Mariota, at least for the first half of the season. Besides, there’s no rush, is there? It’s not like the Falcons are going to be winning the NFC South or contending for a playoff spot this season.
Starting Quarterback Week 1 – Carolina Panthers
The Carolina Panthers were a hot mess, inside a dumpster fire, inside a train wreck. Third-year head coach Matt Rhule is on the hot seat and any bonhomie that quarterback Sam Darnold enjoyed at the start of his first season with the Panthers is likely gone.
And yet, bookmakers fancy Darnold as the starter for the Panthers in Week 1. The former New York Jets No. 3 pick in the 2018 draft is projected as a -450 favorite over rookie Matt Corral.
- Sam Darnold -450
- Matt Corral +275
This market outlook doesn’t correspond to the real-time situation. The Panthers organization was reportedly courting multiple other teams to get a quarterback in the offseason. Baker Mayfield was one name that was trotted out several times.
If that’s not an indication that the organization isn’t high on Darnold, what is? And if the organization isn’t high on the 25-year-old Jets cast-off, how can the players in the locker room be? Or the bookmakers, for that matter? Basically, the team implied in not so many words that it can’t rely on Darnold.
There’s “urgency” from Panthers’ side to trade for Baker Mayfield soon so he can play in minicamp, per @jjones9

Ole Miss quarterback Corral may be the best option for a fresh start in Carolina and for Rhule if he hopes to keep his NFL head coaching job. Coral should not only go into preseason in a dead heat for the starting job, but he should win it.
Starting Quarterback Week 1 – Pittsburgh Steelers
A new era is set to dawn in Steel City following the retirement of future Hall of Fame quarterback Ben Roethlisberger. The Steelers’ stalwart and two-time Super Bowl champion, fondly known as Big Ben, leaves big shoes to fill. The question is which quarterback will get the nod? Who will it be under center, running the team out of the tunnel and onto the field?
The online NFL betting market is the tightest for the Pittsburgh Steelers in comparison to the others. Former Chicago Bears first-round draft pick Mitch Trubisky is the favorite at -220. However, University of Pittsburgh quarterback Kenny Pickett is a viable option as the small +155 underdog.
- Mitchell Trubisky -220
- Kenny Pickett +155
Trubisky spent a season with the Buffalo Bills as Josh Allen’s backup. He was used sparingly in that role, throwing a handful of passes over six games. Overall, Trubisky’s stats included six completions, eight attempts for 43 yards and one interception. He finished with a passer rating of 47.4.
In his last full season with the Bears, Trubisky played 10 games, throwing for 2,055 yards, 16 touchdowns, and eight interceptions. He finished with a QBR of 53.8%.
Trubisky’s failure in Chicago is a topic of much debate. Was he the victim of an unimaginative coaching staff that failed to provide him with the right conditions for success? Or is it not that deep, and he’s simply (dare it to be said) not that good?
If he gets the start, we will know the answer soon enough. Mike Tomlin is one of the best head coaches in the league, so Trubisky will have no excuses. That said, he must first win the starting job. It won’t be easy because Pickett will fancy his chances in this matchup. Let’s face it, Trubisky doesn’t set the bar too high.
