Packers Need Fast Start to Return to Playoffs in 2024

Apparently, there is life after Aaron Rodgers. Jordan Love was one of the most productive quarterbacks in the second half of the 2023 NFL season, leading the Green Bay Packers into the playoffs for the 12th time in the last 15 seasons. Green Bay heads into the 2024 season looking for more after topping the Dallas Cowboys and losing on a late touchdown to the San Francisco 49ers in last year’s playoffs.

The NFL odds have the Packers behind only the Detroit Lions in the NFC North Division odds. Green Bay is fifth at +850 in the odds of representing the NFC in the Super Bowl.

Second-round pick Edgerrin Cooper is tied for 11th at +2800 in the odds to win the NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year.

When looking at the NFL futures odds, there are nine teams with better odds of winning the Super Bowl than the Packers.

Things get underway in the preseason when the Packers hit the road to meet up with the Cleveland Browns on Aug. 10. A week later, Green Bay is on the road again versus Denver. The preseason wraps up at home against the Baltimore Ravens.

Tough Opening Act

There are road trips and then there are road trips.

Green Bay’s first game in the regular season will be played in Sao Paulo, Brazil, against the Philadelphia Eagles in a matchup of two NFC title contenders. Green Bay is listed by the NFL betting line as a 1½-point underdog with +105 odds to win the game outright. The last time the teams played was in 2022, when the Eagles won 40-33 in a game that went over the 46½-point total by halftime.

Receiver Christian Watson had 110 receiving yards and a touchdown while A.J. Dillon also scored a touchdown for the Packers. Love was 6-for-9 for 113 yards and a touchdown in the game after Rodgers was knocked out of the game in the third quarter.

The Packers won the 2023 season opener against the Chicago Bears before losing five of the next six games. Five of the losses for the Packers in the 2023 regular season came by four points or less.

Ready to Hit the Ground Running?

While the departure of Rodgers dominated the talk in the offseason a year ago, it was a much quieter scene this time around.

The biggest change came at the running back positions as Aaron Jones is gone and former Las Vegas Raiders star Josh Jacobs was brought in to add some punch to the running game. The Packers also picked up MarShawn Lloyd out of Southern California in the 2024 NFL Draft to compete with Dillon for carries.

Longtime left tackle David Bakhtiari is also gone while Andre Dillard came over from the Philadelphia Eagles.

Green Bay did lose four of its top seven tacklers but the Packers have been adding talent on that side of the ball in recent NFL Drafts, so this could be the year when some of the youngsters take the next step. Defensive end Preston Smith is the only defensive player on the Green Bay roster older than 30.

Middle of the Season Could Determine Green Bay’s Fortunes

After facing the Eagles, things look pretty promising for Green Bay with the next five games coming against the Indianapolis Colts, Tennessee Titans, Minnesota Vikings, Los Angeles Rams and Arizona Cardinals.

Green Bay needs to take care of business during that stretch of games because things will soon get much more challenging with matchups against the Houston Texans, Jacksonville Jaguars, Detroit Lions, Chicago Bears, San Francisco 49ers, Miami Dolphins and the Lions again over the next seven games.

There is a bye week in between the first matchup with the Lions and the showdown with No. 1 overall pick Caleb Williams and the Chicago Bears.

Packers Eye Division Title

It is a little strange not to have a showdown between the Packers and the Lions over the final month of the regular season.

Green Bay ends the regular season against Minnesota and Chicago and the hope is that the division title is within the grasp of the Packers heading into the final two games.

The Packers won three consecutive NFC North Division titles from 2019 to 2021 and were 39-10 in those three seasons. Over the last two years, Green Bay finished third and second in the NFC North with a 17-17 record.

Season Prediction

It has been interesting to watch Green Bay rebuild its roster with some familiar faces heading elsewhere. Now the Packers have a roster full of promising youngsters.

The NFL picks always have the Packers in the thick of things in the NFC North race and this year is now different. While Green Bay is looking to dethrone the Detroit Lions, the Packers can’t forget about either the Chicago Bears or the Minnesota Vikings.

Green Bay could easily finish first or fourth in this division. It seems more likely that the final finishing spot will be somewhere in between as Green Bay eyes another playoff appearance.

The Packers were 4-2 against NFC North teams and 7-5 versus NFC opponents. Can the Packers repeat those numbers?

Green Bay was favored at home in just three games a season ago. Expect that number to change in 2024.

There are -115 odds for Green Bay to finish either under or over 10 wins during the regular season. That is a pretty tough call but the Packers could head into the final two games of the regular season with a chance to hit double digits in wins.
