Patrick Mahomes Restructures Contract Giving Chiefs Over $21 Million in Cap Relief

The Additional Cap Space Allows KC to Add More Talent as They Look to Three-Peat

Making Room for Talent

In breaking NFL news, Kansas City Chiefs star quarterback, Patrick Mahomes, has agreed to restructure his contract which will free up $21.6 million in cap space for the team. The additional money will allow the team to sign more players and compete for higher-priced free agents before the 2024 NFL Draft in April.

Patrick Mahomes’ career stats include 28,412 passing yards, 219 touchdowns, 63 interceptions, and a 66.5% completion rate over 96 regular season games. The 28-year-old superstar also has three Super Bowl rings, three Super Bowl MVP awards, two league MVPs, and is a 6x Pro Bowler. He is currently in the middle of a 10-year, $450 million deal.

After winning the last two Super Bowls, it is not surprising to learn that Kansas City has fewer glaring needs than most teams but Mahomes’ cooperation in redoing his deal will allow his team to make moves they would not have been able to make, as the Chiefs had virtually no room to make any signings.

It should be noted, only days ago KC re-signed a pivotal force on its defensive line when they inked Chris Jones to a five-year, $158.75 million deal, of which $101 million is guaranteed, to return to anchor its defensive interior, making Jones the highest-paid nose tackle in NFL history.

The team also signed linebacker, Drue Tranquill, to a three-year, $19 million extension on Wednesday. We can expect the KC Chiefs to use the additional cap space afforded by Mahomes’ cooperation to sign a wide receiver or strong-side linebacker in the coming weeks.
