Head-to-Head
Monday’s matchup between New England and New York will be the first meeting of the year between these two AFC East foes. They’ll play again in the final week of the regular season. It has been four full seasons since the Jets last defeated the Patriots, a span of eight games. In fact, New York has won just twice in the last 18 meetings, with both victories coming in overtime.

Last Game
New England suffered its fourth straight loss on Sunday to the Bills, who are sitting in first place in the AFC East. Cam Newton fumbled on the Bills’ 14-yard line with 31 seconds left. The Patriots were down three points and driving to possibly win the game but could definitely have sent it to overtime with a chip shot field goal.
I don’t believe a lot of people realized how valuable Tom Brady was to this franchise. Newton made a lot of NFL news when he replaced Brady. Newton doesn’t have many weapons to work with, but the former MVP has not been able to give this offense any spark as of late.
Stats Pack
The Patriots have been establishing themselves as a running team throughout 2020. Overall, their offense is in the bottom half of the league, but they’re third in rushing yards per game. Damien Harris shined last week for New England with over 100 yards on 16 carries with a score.
Trends
Newton hasn’t had a great performance since his outing in Seattle five games ago. That was the only game that he threw for over 175 yards as a Patriot.

Last Game
There’s not much to say about the Jets’ last contest against the Chiefs. They were blown off the field just like many of their games this season. The Jets were outgained by the Chiefs, 496-221, and were unable to find the end zone once last Sunday.
Sam Darnold threw for 133 yards, and Frank Gore led the rushing attack with 30 yards. Sunday was a typical Jets performance.
Stats Pack
Darnold has had a rough season thus far. It looks like Jets fans have written off Darnold with the hope of Trevor Lawrence joining the squad if the Jets get the first pick in the 2021 Draft. This isn’t unwarranted. Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes threw more touchdowns on Sunday than Darnold has thrown all year long.
Trends
It looks like the Jets are on to 2021 with some of their recent trades. Recently, they traded linebacker Avery Williamson to the Steelers for 2022 fifth- and seventh-round picks. Head coach Adam Gase claims that they’re still all-in on 2020, but with their recent activity and probable last-place division finish, I don’t believe this at all.

Betting on the Game
Point Spread
The Patriots are a better team than the Jets even though they’re only two games in front of New York. The Patriots are .500 ATS as favorites, and the NFL odds currently have them as seven-point favorites for Monday. The Jets have lost by at least that much in all eight games this season.
Moneyline
The Patriots aren’t having their typical year, but they’ve been in games with good teams like Seattle and Buffalo. They’ve also slipped up multiple times but still have two wins under their belts. The Jets are still searching for a win, and with their recent trades, it will be tough to find one on Monday night, even against a struggling New England squad.
Over/Under
The Jets are scoring under 12 points per game. I don’t trust them to put the ball in the end zone against the Patriots, who held the Bills to 24 points last week. The Patriots will have to carry the load for this game to go over.
New England is 3-4 for the over/under this year. If there’s any week where the Patriots should put up points, it’s Monday night against the Jets. In making your NFL picks, expect Newton to come out on fire with his starting job on the line.
