The teams last met in December of last season, with the Eagles winning 22-21 in Philadelphia in a mistake-filled contest.
Next game: at Jets
The Eagles were brilliant in the first half, storming to a 27-7 halftime lead over the shorthanded New Orleans Saints. The Eagles extended their lead to 33-7 after three quarters and then held on for a 40-29 win.
Philadelphia got complacent late in the game, allowing 22 fourth-quarter points to the Saints. They did hang on, though, and the team has now won three of its last four games to get back into the NFC playoff picture. Jalen Hurts is playing well for the Eagles.
He is using his legs to make plays, and coach Nick Sirianni is trusting his ability as a runner with good results.
The main concern is that Hurts might take too much of a pounding, much as Cam Newton lost productivity with the Carolina Panthers because he was asked to play with the style of a running back, even though he was a quarterback. The Eagles have to be careful with Hurts.
The Eagles have linebacker Shaun Bradley listed as probable. He is battling a shoulder injury. Linebacker Davion Taylor is out.
However, Philadelphia is most concerned about cornerback Darius Slay. The Eagles need him on their back line of defense.
Slay has to clear concussion protocol in order to play. Stay tuned for more information on his status as the week continues. Look for updates before kickoff.
New York Giants
Next game: at Dolphins
The Giants were blown out by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Monday Night Football, 30-10.
Nothing about this struggling offense worked: Daniel Jones’ accuracy, pass protection, the production of the wide receivers – nothing came together.
Joe Judge fired offensive coordinator Jason Garrett after the game, the latest source of disruption for a team that is going nowhere.
The Giants are 5-5 against the NFL odds and 3-6-1 in over-unders.
The Giants are coming off a short week, having played on Monday Night Football. Three offensive players are questionable, and they are all important ones: receiver Kadarius Toney (quadricep), tight end Kyle Rudolph (ankle) and receiver Sterling Shepard (quad).
The Giants especially need Toney, who is electric in the open field. They need at least one of Toney or Shepard to spread out the Eagles’ secondary.
If Darius Slay can’t play for the Eagles but the Giants lack both Toney and Shepard, New York might not be able to take advantage of Slay’s limited health.
Betting on the Game
The injuries to Slay and the Giants’ receivers mean that the best play for this game is the under, more than a point-spread bet.
The Eagles are likely to win, but in an NFC East game not involving the Cowboys, no one should be too certain of what will happen.
