Steelers Stack Quarterbacks

NFL rumors were circulating that the Pittsburgh Steelers were not done tending to the quarterback position even after signing former Denver Broncos free agent Russell Wilson. Those rumors proved to be prescient as Pittsburgh’s front office continued its search to bolster the most important position on the field and were able to strike a deal with the Chicago Bears for their starting quarterback, Justin Fields.

According to league sources, the Bears will receive a 2025 sixth-round pick that will become a 2025 fourth-round pick should Fields take 51% of the snaps this season. If that were to happen, it would mean that Russell Wilson was either injured or outplayed by the 25-year-old former Ohio State product.

Fields was deemed expendable once it became clear Chicago would have the No. 1 overall pick in the draft, thanks to a deal with Carolina last year. USC’s Caleb Williams is the consensus top quarterback in the draft and will likely be replacing Fields under center at Soldier Field this season.

Bears general manager Ryan Poles said this after the deal was consummated, “We have engaged in multiple trade conversations in recent weeks and believe trading Justin at this time to Pittsburgh is what is best for both Justin and the Bears. Today we spoke to Justin to inform him of the trade and the rationale behind it for us as a club.”

“We want to thank him for his tireless dedication, leadership, and all he poured into our franchise and community the last three years and wish him the best towards a long and successful NFL career.

Impact on Field

Justin Fields’ stats suggest this is a player on the rise. Despite playing in only 13 NFL games last season due to a dislocated right thumb, Fields had 2,562 passing yards, more than in his previous two seasons, while tossing 16 touchdowns, 9 picks, and 4 rushing touchdowns.

Fields are also well-regarded by one of the most lethal receivers in the league. When All-Pro Vikings wideout Justin Jefferson was asked in 2021 who he’d like to be catching passes from after Kirk Cousins leaves, he said, “We have to build on for after Kirk. Having Justin Fields brings a little more pressure to other teams by having a dominant quarterback — like he is.

Fields’ rookie contract is set to expire after this season unless the Steelers trigger his fifth-year option by May 2nd which would keep him under their control for this year and next. However, Fields’ would cost the team in the neighborhood of $25 million in 2025, a price tag too rich for a backup quarterback and one who could very well be a one-year rental.
