Head-to-Head

A rematch of Super Bowl XXX. And XIII. And X. Curiously, Jason Garrett did coach the Cowboys long enough to face Mike Tomlin twice. (The Cowboys won both games.) But where these teams play only every four years, the stable long-term Pittsburgh coach can usually look forward to whoever is pleasing the Cowboys’  owner this season. Super Bowl XXX was represented by the Steelers’ previous coach.

Last Game

In the game of the week last Sunday, the Steelers didn’t win so much as the Ravens found a way not to. The Ravens nullified what might have been a humiliation based on the stat sheet — they outgained the Steelers 265-48 yards on the ground and owned lopsided wins in pretty much every statistical category — except for the turnover differential, which Baltimore lost by three.

An early Pittsburgh pick-xix, Lamar Jackson being sacked four times. and Ravens’ fumbles in their territory all kept what might have been a blowout competitive. The Steelers ultimately took the straight up moneyline as a dog and against the spread.

Markets absolutely crashed the total from a high of 49 to a close of 44. Any attempt to set up a middle here was a good intention, but some quirky scoring opportunities put this one over even the watermark with a 28-24 final.

Injury Report

What little is known about injuries after a Steelers game, it is reported that DE Cam Hayward was dealing with a quad injury. Tomlin downplayed the injury claiming he was optimistic he could play this week. Considering the usual physical nature of their games against the Ravens, last week’s contest didn’t yield any obvious player losses. That said, the practice week is ahead and will reveal much more.

Last Game

The Sunday Night Football game in Week 8 featured a weak matchup between the Dallas Cowboys and Philadelphia Eagles. It featured Cowboys’ third-string quarterback Ben DiNucci in his first (and likely last) NFL start.

The game featured everything: crummy officiating, a missed field goal, a safety, a fumble return for a touchdown, and DiNucci sacked four times. Not many stat sheets show a team that loses the turnover difference of 4-2 and wins the game by two touchdowns. When this game gets plotted on future best-fit graphs, it’ll be one of the ones that kind of floats far off the curve.

Bettors took the Eagles from just above a touchdown to as high as -11 on news of DiNucci’s start. Some brave souls either stepped in at +11 to support the Cowboys or try for a middle. Both of those failed as the final 23-9 went far to the under on a total that fluctuated between 42 and 43.

Injury Report

Just when it looked like the Dallas Cowboys would get their backup quarterback Andy Dalton back to stem some (any) of the bleeding, he’s on a second protocol. In addition to trying to clear the concussion protocol, Dalton has now been added to the Covid-IR list. With that, his status for Sunday is now clearly out.

But the fun doesn’t stop there with these Cowboys — reportedly, the team will not be giving DiNucci a second chance. Instead. the team will try out Garrett Gilbert and Cooper Rush in practice and decide who gets the start. Pure gunpowder.

Betting on the Game

Point Spread

This game wasn’t just off the board, it was found vomiting behind the dumpster around the back of the sportsbook. When finally they dragged it in and posted it, the belief was Dalton would start. After news that Dalton couldn’t go and the team would start experimenting with quarterbacks, everything blew up. Apparently as low as -9 at one point, the Steelers are now -13½-point chalk on the road in Jerry’s World.

Moneyline

Laying almost two majors brings with it a moneyline of -850 on the Steelers, making them this week’s survivor darlings for the small handful of players still left after last week. The dog price of +625 is there for anyone who believes in Texas miracles.

Over/Under

The total here has come down a notch from 42 to 41½. The game was posted later in the cycle and hasn’t been available before
