Super Bowl 57 – Mahomes vs Hurts

Black History Month: African-American Quarterbacks Face Off

Two black quarterbacks will face off in the Super Bowl for the first time when Patrick Mahomes and Jalen Hurts lead their respective sides, the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles, into State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Ariz., on Feb. 12.

In the history of the NFL, there have only been three black quarterbacks to win a Super Bowl and one of those is Mahomes, who won his maiden title in Super Bowl 54.

In less than two weeks, the game is certainly going to crown a black quarterback, and the fact that it comes during Black History month in America is a fitting touch. The question is: Who will it be?

Will Mahomes lift his second Vince Lombardi Trophy? Or will Hurts realize all his childhood dreams for the first time and win his maiden Super Bowl ring?

Let’s check the latest Super Bowl picks, stats, injury reports, and Super Bowl odds. We’ve got plenty of Super Bowl lines for you to consider.

Black Quarterbacks In Super Bowl History

1. Doug Williams, Super Bowl XXII Champion & MVP

Doug Williams broke new ground for black quarterbacks by becoming the first to start and win a Super Bowl 35 years ago. He was also the first black quarterback to win the game’s MVP award.

Williams started for the then-Washington Redskins in Super Bowl 22, leading the team from the nation’s capital to the 42-10 victory over the Denver Broncos on Jan. 31, 1988. It was a dominant performance in all facets of the game, but Williams stood out. He broke two Super Bowl passing records by passing for 340 yards in total and tossing four touchdown passes in a single quarter.

2. Russell Wilson, Super Bowl XLVIII Champion

It took 26 years for the NFL to welcome its second black quarterback into the championship circle. Russell Wilson earned that honor when he led the Seattle Seahawks to a comprehensive 43-8 victory over the Peyton Manning-led Denver Broncos. However, Wilson would not go on to win the game’s MVP award.

The Legion of Doom was dominant, destructive, powerful and ascendant in Seattle’s championship triumph, and one of those key defenders was Malcolm Smith. The linebacker had a pick-six that he returned 69 yards for the touchdown. He recovered a fumble and had nine tackles. He was constantly in Manning’s face, applying pressure on the Broncos quarterback and never letting up.

3. Patrick Mahomes, Super Bowl LIV Champion & MVP

Patrick Mahomes joined this select group of black quarterbacks two years ago, leading the Chiefs in a come-from-behind 31-20 win over the San Francisco 49ers. Mahomes not only became the third black quarterback to win a Super Bowl, but he also became the second to win the game’s MVP award.

Mahomes was transcended in his first-ever Super Bowl appearance. The then 24-year-old quarterback, widely touted as a generational talent, launched an epic come-from-behind rally as the Chiefs, down 20-10 in the final quarter, reeled off 21 unanswered points to clinch an exhilarating victory in Super Bowl 54.

Mahomes went 26 of 42 for 286 passing yards and two touchdowns with two interceptions. He also rushed for 29 yards and one score.

4. Who Will Become the Next Black QB to Win a Super Bowl?

If the Chiefs win, Mahomes will become the first black quarterback to win multiple Super Bowls a week from Sunday. Only 12 quarterbacks have won two or more Super Bowls, and Mahomes will get a second chance to join this exclusive group of multiple champions in the game

Mahomes is making his third appearance in the Big Game after going 1-1 in his first two starts. A year after winning Super Bowl 54, the Chiefs lost 31-9 to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Super Bowl 55.

If Philadelphia triumphs, Hurts will become the fourth black quarterback to win a Super Bowl.

Doug Williams was asked how he felt about this historic moment. He said, “just to see that those guys are the first two to do it, and the guys they are, it couldn’t make me happier.” — source: Andscape.com

5. Mahomes vs Hurts Head-To-Heads

The Chiefs and Eagles have faced each other only once in four seasons, with the former winning 42-30 at Lincoln Financial Field in Week 4 of the 2021 season.

Mahomes went 24 of 30 for 278 yards, five touchdowns and one interception while finishing with a 131.0 rating. He also rushed for 26 yards on five carries.

Hurts went 32 of 48 for 387 yards, two touchdowns and zero interceptions and finished with a 105.1 rating. He rushed for 47 yards on eight carries.

This is going to be the second meeting between the young signal callers, and the stakes couldn’t be any higher.
