Some teams have already accepted that this isn’t their year while others are still fighting their way to the surface, desperately vying for a better spot in my rankings. Let’s see who still has a shot at making an impact and going after the Vince Lombardi Trophy this season!

NFC Super Bowl Rankings: Top 6 Contenders

1. Detroit Lions (+650)

Last Week Ranking: 1

Kicking things off, there is no way, shape or form that I could not give the top spot back to the Detroit Lions for a second week in a row. Now on a five-game winning streak, the Lions continue to prove why they have the best odds to win the NFC North, especially after stomping the Tennessee Titans with a 52-14 win.

Just like in the past few weeks, Detroit’s offense is surging like an energizer battery — it just keeps going! Quarterback Jared Goff threw for only 85 yards on 12-of-15 passing, and before you ask? No, he wasn’t injured. It was the ground game that stole the show.

Running backs David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs teamed up for another impressive outing. Montgomery racked up 33 yards on nine carries and scored a rushing touchdown while Gibbs absolutely tore up the Titans’ defense with 127 rushing yards on just 11 carries, also finding the end zone.

The Detroit offense may have had its fun, but I’m a bit taken aback by how many yards the defense surrendered to a weaker Titans squad, allowing quarterback Mason Rudolph to throw for 266 yards while also giving up 158 yards on the ground.

Sure, the Lions are winning games, but that defensive performance has me in a bit of a frenzy. Was it a fluke? Maybe, considering they are second in the NFL with 15 takeaways this season. But they can’t afford to let this become continuous. This week, they’re matching up against the Packers, a team with a strong run game and the ability to air it out. Let’s see if the Lions’ defense can bounce back and hold their ground.

2. Green Bay Packers (+1200)

Last Week Ranking: 3

Make some room for the Green Bay Packers as they continue to impress, winning four games in a row with a tight 30-27 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Offensively, the Packers didn’t exactly light up the scoreboard like you might expect against a struggling Jacksonville defense, but they got the job done. Quarterback Jordan Love threw for 196 yards before leaving the game with an injury. More importantly, running back Josh Jacobs led the charge, rushing for 127 yards on 25 carries and scoring two touchdowns.

Don’t start parading just yet, Packers fans. The defensive performance Green Bay put on against Jacksonville — of all teams — was not great and doesn’t help their NFC North odds at all. Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence had the freedom to do pretty much whatever he wanted, throwing for 308 yards with two touchdown passes and just one interception.

Is this something to worry about if you’re a Packers fan? I wouldn’t go that far just yet. Green Bay has shown multiple times this season that it can get defensive stops and create havoc, now leading the league with 17 takeaways after Sunday’s game.

Next week will be a real test for Green Bay on both sides of the ball as they take on the red-hot Detroit Lions in an NFC North battle. While their chances of winning don’t look great, let’s see if their defense can make it tough for the Lions’ offense to see the end zone. Keep an eye on NFL news for injury updates on Love (groin).

3. Washington Commanders (+2200)

Last week Ranking: 4

Sliding into the No. 3 spot in this week’s rankings are the Washington Commanders, making it hard to argue against them. They’re sitting at 6-2 and have won six of their last seven games, coming off a nail-biting 18-15 home victory over a tough Bears team with a last-second Hail Mary.

It was definitely a game to watch, featuring a rookie quarterback duel between Jaden Daniels and Caleb Williams, but Washington proved to be the better squad. Daniels threw for 326 yards, tossed a touchdown and managed to stay turnover-free.

On the ground, running backs Brian Robinson Jr., and Austin Ekeler came up big, with Robinson adding 65 yards on 16 carries while Ekeler chipped in another 52 rushing yards on just seven carries.

Defensively, it seems Washington has turned a corner. They held Bears QB Williams to just 131 passing yards on a rough 10-of-24 completion rate, keeping him out of the end zone. However, the Commanders still need to tighten up their run defense after letting running back DeAndre Swift rack up 129 yards and a touchdown.

Despite that, Washington has a strong case as the team to beat in the NFC East, and I like its odds to win NFC East. Heading into Week 9, they’ll face the New York Giants. That might seem like an easy matchup on paper, but we know divisional games can produce some shocking results, as we’ve seen this past week.

4. Minnesota Vikings (+1800)

Last Week Ranking: 2

Stumbling their way into the fourth spot of my NFC rankings are the Minnesota Vikings. Honestly, I’d put them lower, but their earlier performances this season are keeping them in the top three — for now.

Realistically, they could be ranked lower, especially after dropping two straight games, including a 30-20 loss to the Rams — a team that’s been mediocre at best this season. Vikings fans have reason to start worrying.

Offensively, the Vikings did their part. Quarterback Sam Darnold threw for 240 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions while wide receiver Justin Jefferson stepped up with eight catches for 115 yards.

So, if the offense was rolling, what went wrong? You might want to ask the Minnesota defense, because it looks like it forgot to board the plane for this away game. The Vikings let quarterback Matt Stafford throw for 279 yards and four touchdowns, only managing to force one interception and failing to sack him even once. Rams running back Kyren Williams also had his fun, rushing for 97 yards on 23 carries.

This isn’t the Minnesota defense we’ve seen earlier in the season. As we hit the back half of the season, it’s time to see if the Vikings can bounce back or continue to slide. Next up, they face the Colts at home — maybe that game will show us if they’re staying in the top three or slipping further down the rankings.

5. Atlanta Falcons (+3000)

Last Week Ranking: 5

Coming in at No. 5 this week — and I’m sure it’ll stir up some debate — is the Atlanta Falcons, after picking up a big 31-26 road win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The Falcons’ offense came out swinging with quarterback Kirk Cousins throwing for 276 yards, completing 23-of-29 passes with four touchdown passes and zero interceptions. The run game didn’t play a huge role, with running back Bijan Robinson collecting just 63 yards on 13 carries, but receivers Darnell Mooney and Kyle Pitts kept the chains moving. Mooney had four catches for 86 yards and a touchdown while Pitts racked up 91 yards on four receptions, including two touchdowns.

Defensively, it continues to be the same old story for Atlanta. Giving up 330 passing yards and three touchdowns to quarterback Baker Mayfield and the Bucs offense isn’t going to cut it, especially for a team trying to solidify its odds to win NFC South.

Like the Ravens in the AFC, the Falcons can put up points, but their defense doesn’t hold up the same end of the bargain. If they want to break into the top three or four of my rankings, they’ll need to show some defensive consistency.

Next week, they’ll face the Cowboys at home on Sunday Night Football. Dallas might be having a rough season, but its offense still packs a punch. Let’s see if Atlanta can keep the Cowboys’ offense on their heels.

6. Arizona Cardinals (+8000)

Last Week Ranking: 11

Wrapping up my NFC rankings this week, I’m handing the sixth spot back to the Arizona Cardinals. Before I get into the details, let’s address the obvious: it was a toss-up between the Cardinals and the Seahawks, both sitting at 4-4.

The edge went to Arizona since the Cardinals are on a two-game winning streak, having taken down two of the league’s tougher defenses, while the Seahawks were just dismantled by the Bills. Arizona had the tougher road and it shows.

This past week, the Cardinals skated away with a huge 28-27 win as underdogs against the Dolphins in NFL betting lines. Not to mention, Miami’s defense came into this matchup as the NFL’s leader in passing yards allowed, holding teams to just 154 yards per game.

However, quarterback Kyler Murray and the Arizona offense shrugged off the doubts, with Murray throwing for 307 yards on 26-of-36 passing. He tossed in two touchdowns and didn’t throw a single interception — plus, no sacks!

Rookie wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. and tight end Trey McBride were key players in this game. Harrison posted 111 yards and a touchdown on six catches while McBride added a stellar 124 yards on nine receptions.

Now, Arizona’s defense remains a weak spot. The Cardinals allowed 234 passing yards and 150 rushing yards to Miami. Sure, they were up against a fully healthy Dolphins offense, but if the Cardinals want to stay in the playoff race, they’ll need to make some defensive adjustments. They may not be a defensive juggernaut, but they have to show they can get some stops when it counts.
