The Eagles Just Made Saquon Barkley the Highest-Paid Running Back in the NFL

The Super Bowl Champion Eagles Are Making Sure Saquon Barkley Gets His Pay Day

Saquon Finally Got His Payday

It seems as if the Philadelphia Eagles are ready to make sure their Super Bowl LIX win over the Kansas City Chiefs doesn’t go down in history as a one-and-done deal. According to senior NFL news reporter Adam Schefter, the Eagles are rightfully rewarding all-star running back Saquon Barkley with a two-year, $41 million contract extension that will keep him with the team for at least two more seasons.

But not just that. Following said extension, Barkley, who was undoubtedly the most dominant rusher in the league last season, will now take his place as the highest-paid RB in the NFL, with an estimated $36 million guaranteed between his contract money and $15 million that could come from incentives and deal escalators.

It’s funny that this time last year, NFL rumors were rife about what the New York Giants would do with Barkley.

Funny for everyone except the Giants, of course.

Howie Roseman Is Making Sure Everybody Is Happy

If they were to give an award or any other kind of recognition for who the true architect of Philadelphia’s Super Bowl run last season was, my pick wouldn’t be Nick Siriani or Jalen Hurts. Not even Saquon. It would be for Eagles General Manager Howie Roseman.

Taking a team that was down and out for the season a couple of years ago and transforming it into an NFL pick and predictions favorite this past season, with elite draft picks, savvy free agency auditions, and contract restructuring moves, Roseman showed the league not only how to build a potential dynasty but also how to do it easily.

We’re talking about a team that, at least for now, on offense, is set to dominate the NFC for the next four to five years, with Saquon’s extension being his last master move.

Having won 14 NFL games out of 17 last season, Roseman made sure coach Siriani had one of the most competitive rosters in the league, with players not overly worrying about off-the-field contract issues, instead putting all of their focus on doing what they did best: winning games and titles.

And you might think, Howie must feel pretty good about himself right now. He got the league’s best running back ready to run it all back for a couple more seasons. Future betting odds of Super Bowl LX already have the Eagles as favorites.

But while everybody is celebrating his biggest moves, Roseman has also quietly been putting one and one together to not only get his best players more money but save the Eagles money as well to strengthen their roster further this offseason.

Yes, even after offering Barkley his well-deserved multi-million dollar extension, Roseman still saved money for the team by cutting Saquon’s cap hit in half. This created more cap space for potential offseason moves.

Seriously, man, Roseman deserves a statue like Rocky Balboa’s in Philly.

Will Saquon’s New Contract Open a New Era for RBs?

Of course, right after Saquon’s extension was announced, it didn’t take long for the debate on whether the running back position is making a comeback in the league or if this was just a one-and-done kind of scenario to begin.

If you ask me, a football fan and writer, I firmly believe RBs deserve more love. But, at the same time, just because one guy got a record-breaking deal, it doesn’t mean every single back in the league has automatically earned his right to go and ask for more money.

Look at Saquon Barkley’s stats from last season. That man put up numbers that other backs in the league can only dream of. He rushed his way to that extension, putting him atop the best-paid RBs in the league.

In a world where accountability rules, if rushers want to get their payday just like Barkley, putting up stat lines like Philly’s elite rusher will have to be the standard bar from now on.
