Head-to-Head

The history between the Minnesota Vikings and Houston Texans doesn’t go far back, but it’s been one-sided. The two franchises have met four times, but it’s worth noting the Texans came into the league as an expansion team in 2002.

The Vikings picked up victories in 2004, 2008, 2012, and 2016, with all but one victory coming by at least a touchdown. No doubt Deshaun Watson & Co. will be looking to turn that streak around in this weekend’s Minnesota Vikings vs Houston Texans matchup.

The Vikings have sputtered out of the gate to start the 2020 NFL season, dropping their first three games, including a 31-30 loss to the Tennessee Titans on a late field goal in Week 3. While quarterback Kirk Cousins had struggled to start the season, he completed 16-of-27 passes for 251 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions against the Titans.

Dalvin Cook’s increased workload in Week 3 was noteworthy, as he received 22 carries for 181 yards and one score.

Stats Pack

Cousins’ play will be key to the Vikings’ success, especially if he can avoid turning the ball over. But Cook was a big reason the Vikings nearly pulled off the win against the Titans in Week 2.

His 22 rushing attempts were eight more than the previous game, and the 181 yards on the ground were nearly three times his previous high this season.

Last Game

The Texans’ tough start to the season continued in Week 3 against the Pittsburgh Steelers in the form of a 28-21 loss on the road. Houston’s offense has struggled to hit its stride following the trade of wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins this offseason.

The player Hopkins was traded for, running back David Johnson, couldn’t get much going in Week 3. Johnson tallied just 23 yards on 13 carries but did manage to find the end zone.

Quarterback play for the Texans with Watson will be key against the Vikings, as Minnesota has allowed 299.7 passing yards per game this season. If Watson is able to get it going early and connect with his top wide receivers in Will Fuller, Brandin Cooks, Randall Cobb, and Kenny Stills, it’ll open up the field for the rest of the offense.

Vikings vs Texans Betting Odds for the Game

Point Spread

With two 0-3 teams, the spread is about what you’d expect, but both the Texans and Vikings are better than a typical winless squad. Houston gets the edge on its home field, and it’s tough to envision the Texans not playing with a major sense of urgency to pick up a victory at home.

Moneyline

The Vikings’ moneyline odds are pushing close to +200, a number which would be worth backing if you’re a believer that Minnesota can get the job done on the road. On the other side, the Texans’ moneyline odds aren’t great, but if you’re worried about a field goal game, they may make sense.

Vikings vs Texans Betting Odds -Over/Under

Both the Vikings and Texans are 2-1 in favor of the over this year, but 53.5 is a big number. The two defenses have left a lot to be desired, and expecting a large number of points in this game is a wise approach to take.
