10 Most Impactful Incoming College Football Transfers

The transfer portal is the last chance during the offseason for college football teams to address pressing needs. On May 1, the transfer portal hit its deadline and will not reopen until August 1. This is a much-needed break from the unbelievable roster churning across college football.

In only one academic year, over 6,600 college football players hit the portal. This includes divisions FBS. FCS. etc, roughly 680 schools, which comes out to nearly 10 transfers per school.

Now that we can catch our breath and look at the official transfers in college football, here are the 10 most impactful incoming transfers across the sport.

1. Jared Verse | Edge, Florida State

Jared Verse is an intriguing defensive end coming from Albany, an FCS school. Verse is a redshirt sophomore coming off a 4-sack and 10 tackles for loss season.

His huge potential makes the defensive transfer one to keep an eye on. The rising transfer possesses an impressive frame at 6-foot-4, 251 pounds.

Last season, Verse was an explosive pass-rusher backed by his strength. At this point, he is not the most polished rusher as he relies on a bull rush.

However, a notable school like Florida State could do wonders for his development. This is a defensive end with NFL upside, keep an eye on the transfer from Albany.

2. Zach Evans | RB, Ole Miss Athletics

The one-time 5-star running back prospect is on the move yet again. Zach Evans’ recruitment in high school was a roller coaster.

Evans signed with Georgia during the early signing people but was released from his letter of intent after numerous off-the-field issues with his high school team. After endless visits and rumors, Evans enrolled at TCU in May of 2020.

This time around, his recruitment in the transfer portal did not have near the same drama. Evans is an extremely gifted running back with a high upside. He began to show that with TCU last season after four straight games with more than 100 rushing yards.

Evans will be on the big stage with Ole Miss in the SEC.

3. Brandon Joseph | S, Notre Dame Fighting Irish

While Notre Dame loses star safety, Kyle Hamilton, to the NFL Draft, it replaces him with one heck of a safety. Brandon Joseph comes from Northwestern where he was an All-American in the 2020 season.

He had a slight drop in production last season with the Wildcats. With Notre Dame, Joseph could get back to being one of the nation’s best defensive backs.

4. Jermaine Burton | WR, University of Alabama Athletics

If Alabama had one concern going into the offseason it was finding receivers. The Crimson Tide had to replace star Jameson Williams and had little depth behind their starters.

Nick Saban plucked one of the portal’s best wideouts from their conference rival Georgia. Jermaine Burton was one of the Bulldogs’ best WR over the last two seasons. His explosive speed has made him one of the SEC’s best deep threats.

With Alabama’s Bryce Young as his QB, look for Burton’s career to take off in Tuscaloosa.

5. Kingsley Suamataia | OT, BYU Cougars

In the 2021 recruiting class, Kingsley Suamataia was a 5-star offensive tackle prospect. Suamataia transferred to BYU and will become the third-highest recruit to play for the Cougars.

At 6-foot-5, 317 pounds combined with impressive athleticism, Suamataia would have been a big get for any school. Surely he will be a major contributor at BYU and should be an instant starter.

6. Quinn Ewers | QB, Texas Longhorns

Quinn Ewers was one of many young, talented quarterbacks in the portal this offseason. Ewers was one of the highest-ranked QB recruits of all time.

After reclassifying to the 2021 class, he was a backup at Ohio State last season. He decided to go home to the Texas Longhorns via the portal. For Texas, Ewers has the potential to be a program-shifting superstar.

Ewers figures to be a full-year starter with the Longhorns in the upcoming season.

7. Jahmyr Gibbs | RB, Alabama Athletics

In this year’s transfer portal, Jahmyr Gibbs was the most sought-after running back. He averaged 6.8 yards per touch in his first two seasons with Georgia Tech and comes off a 1,200 yards from scrimmage season.

Alabama needed another RB after Brian Robinson Jr. entered the draft. Gibbs will be a major threat with the Tide as a do it all back.

8. Jaxson Dart | QB, Ole Miss Athletics

Jaxson Dart looked like the odd man out at USC after Lincoln Riley became the Trojan Head Coach. Dart looked like a future star QB after playing in six games during his true freshman season.

This was a must-get transfer for many schools since Dart has high upside with two years before becoming draft eligible. Ole Miss was the lucky winner in this recruitment. Lane Kiffin could further his QB guru reputation with Dart.

9. Eli Ricks | DB, Alabama Athletics

The rich get richer. Eli Ricks could be Alabama’s biggest get this offseason. He is another former 5-star prospect that starred at LSU.

In his first season, Ricks was a lockdown DB in the slot. His sophomore season was not as good, but still impressive. The Crimson Tide could have their lockdown corner for next season after reeling in Ricks.

10. Caleb Williams | QB, USC

Spencer Rattler was supposed to be a Heisman contender last season, but Caleb Williams had other plans in mind.

With Rattler struggling last season, Riley decided to play the 5-star true freshman Williams. After heroics in the Red River Rivalry, Williams was already getting Heisman hype.

Williams was one of several Oklahoma players to follow Riley to USC. Not only did the Trojans land one of college football’s best coaches, they also got one of the country’s best QBs.
