2023 CFL Grey Cup Odds: Bet on Title Rematch

The 2023 CFL playoffs kick off on Saturday. And as the CFL football odds indicate, either Winnipeg or Toronto will walk away on top. Last year’s Grey Cup finalists currently have short odds on each side to win the title and it’s for good reason: They combined to go 29-5 against the rest of the CFL.

Toronto only lost twice and one of these came against Winnipeg. They are leagues above the rest, hence why the Argonauts are the best bets in CFL football.

Toronto, Winnipeg Own the CFL

This is how it feels as both Toronto and Winnipeg have consistently beaten everyone. The Argonauts even went a perfect 10-0 against their division. Now, they rest during this first week of the CFL Playoffs and await the winner of the Eastern semifinal.

Calgary visits BC in the West while Hamilton heads to Montreal in the East. The CFL betting odds favor the home teams here: the Lions and Alouettes, respectively.

Of these teams, the Lions are a distant third behind Toronto and Winnipeg. BC finished with a 12-6 record. It upset Winnipeg 30-6 early in the season but then lost its next two meetings and its sole matchup against Toronto. The Lions also face the Stampeders as 6½-point favorites and have won three of their last four games against them.

But, Calgary did just destroy BC 41-16 in their most recent meeting. And they Stampeders did this in the Lions’ home. Even if the Stampeders are just 6-12 and hardly worthy of a playoff spot, upsets are common in the CFL playoffs.

As for the East matchup, this is a more even affair. Despite the online sports betting lines favoring Montreal, many CFL picks are split between the Alouettes and Hamilton. Montreal has won six straight games against Hamilton, but the Tiger-Cats have flourished as underdogs this season: They are 5-5 straight-up as one.

Montreal and Hamilton went a combined 0-7 against Toronto this season. Thus, they have long odds to capture the Grey Cup and will be hard-pressed to get past the defending Grey Cup champions.

Another Toronto-Winnipeg Grey Cup?

The CFL football lines should favor a rematch of last year’s Grey Cup. Fans won’t mind this as the Blue Bombers-Argonauts game was a nail-biter and came down to the final possessions. Something similar might happen in a potential rematch.

It’s hard to predict who will be favored by the sportsbook. Winnipeg lost that title game but it beat Toronto this season, albeit when the Argos were injury-riddled.

But wait. This is not set in stone. Winnipeg faces longer odds to win the Grey Cup because it has a potential matchup with the Lions in the West Finals. BC did defeat Winnipeg this season, though the last two games proved that Winnipeg was a cut above.

Still, making four straight Grey Cups is a feat not achieved since Edmonton did it from 1978 to 1982.

The Bombers have been banged up and have notable injuries to stars like defensive end Willie Jefferson, linebacker Adam Bighill and even quarterback Zach Collaros. The bye week will help each recuperate. Though with their “advanced” ages, they face a youth disadvantage against the Argonauts.

But while Toronto is also younger, generally, it has been nicked up. Toronto’s injury list is even longer than Winnipeg’s. Star quarterback Chad Kelly has a bum leg while running back Andrew Harris is sidelined. That’s just a sample.

Given all these uncertainties, betting on Toronto is a more solid proposition. It has an easier path to the Grey Cup and, once there, it can settle the score with Winnipeg.
