Aaron Rodgers has faced the San Francisco 49ers three times in the playoffs during his remarkable run with the Green Bay Packers and the 49ers survived and advanced each time. That is one trend the future Hall of Famer is trying to end.
One of the things working in Green Bay’s favor is that not only are the Packers playing at home, but they were the only team in the NFL to go through the 2021 regular season undefeated at home. Green Bay (+350) has the best odds to win the Super Bowl.
Let’s check the latest news, stats, injury reports, and NFL lines for the San Francisco 49ers vs Green Bay Packers NFC Divisional Round playoff game. We’ve got plenty of predictions for you to consider.
Fourth Time the charm for Rodgers, Packers?
Green Bay: Unfinished Business
The Green Bay Packers don’t catch nearly as much heat as the Dallas Cowboys for their postseason failures, yet since winning the Super Bowl following the 2010 season, the Packers have won seven division titles (including this year) and have no Super-Bowl appearances to show for it. Green Bay has lost in the NFC Championship Game four times since that 2010 season.
Last season, Green Bay played host to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, a team with a less than stellar track record playing in frigid environments. It was Tom Brady leading Tampa Bay or, should we say, Tompa Bay to not only the Super Bowl but an upset of defending champion Kansas City.
While this season wasn’t always pretty, Green Bay has the chance to reach the Super Bowl without stepping on a plane once again. First, however, the Packers need to do something they haven’t done since 2002 – beat the 49ers in the postseason.
The Packers are coming off a bye week after earning the No. 1 seed in the NFC playoffs. It gave Rodgers time to rest his ailing toe and running back Aaron Jones was also able to get healthier. Not having a game a week ago should also prove beneficial for left tackle David Bakhtiari, who has missed much of the season with a knee injury.
Shutdown cornerback Jaire Alexander has a chance to return to the field and that would be huge in Green Bay’s quest to slow down versatile San Francisco playmaker Deebo Samuel.
Linebacker De’Vondre Campbell and receiver Randall Cobb are both listed as probable, so the Green Bay athletic trainers certainly didn’t have a bye week as they have worked diligently to get the tam as healthy as possible for a deep playoff run.
Even with players going in and out of the lineup, Green Bay scored at least 30 points in six of its last seven games in the regular season. If that happens on Saturday, the Packers should be back in the NFC title game.
Green Bay has won its last 12 regular-season games when listed by the NFL picks against the spread as the favorite at home, but has won just five of its last 12 home playoff games when favored.
49ers Trying to Crash Party of Division Winners
A year ago, it was the Tampa Bay Buccaneers who used the regular season to figure things out. Once the postseason hit, the Buccaneers went on the road to spring one upset after another en route to the franchise’s second Super Bowl title.
Unlike Tampa Bay, which was healthy come postseason time, San Francisco is dealing with injury concerns to some key players, including pass-rusher extraordinaire Nick Bosa, rookie running back Elijah Mitchell and leading tackler Fred Warner.
It is a different 49ers team if any or all of those players miss the game or are limited. Bosa was fourth in the NFL during the regular season with 15½ sacks and was tied for the NFL lead with 21 tackles for loss. He was knocked out of the playoff win at Dallas and is currently in concussion protocol. He did return to the practice field on Wednesday so that could be a positive sign.
Pro Bowl defensive end Nick Bosa returned to the #49ers‘ practice field Wednesday, an encouraging sign he is advancing through the NFL’s concussion protocol and is on pace to be on the field Saturday against the #Packers. https://t.co/q1lXG4EnzV

San Francisco has 11 defensive players are on the injury report and 10 of them have questionable tags. With all due respect to the other players, Warner, none are as important as Bosa, who suffered the concussion in last week’s win over the Dallas Cowboys.
The good news is that rookie quarterback Trey Lance is being utilized in practice as a scout-team quarterback, an indication that the shoulder issue that landed starting QB Jimmy Garoppolo on the injury report won’t keep him out of the game.
The 49ers proved that they could hold their own against the best competition in the regular season. San Francisco was 4-4 against teams that made the playoffs, with three of the four losses by seven points or less, including a two-point setback to Green Bay on a last-second field goal.
San Francisco has won its last three games when listed by the Las Vegas odds as the underdog and covered each time.
49ers vs Packers Head to Head
The San Francisco 49ers have won six of the last 10 games against the Green Bay Packers. It looked like it was going to be seven out of 10 when the rivals met in late September. The 49ers took the lead with 37 seconds left to play, but two completions from Aaron Rodgers to Davante Adams set up Mason Crosby for the game-winning 51-yard field goal.
Visiting Green Bay was a three-point underdog and covered for the second straight time after going 1-6-1 against the spread in its previous eight matchups with San Francisco.
The 49ers won the last three playoff meetings, including a 37-20 win on Jan. 19, 2020.

49ers vs Packers Odds & Betting Lines
The number opened at 5½ on the Green Bay Packers but with money rolling in on the favored home team, the line went to six, which is the highest of the four playoff games this weekend. If you think San Francisco will win or at least stay within at least five points, put your money on the 49ers. The total is 47, which seems a bit on the low side of things.
A Saturday night game in January at Lambeau Field is not for the faint of heart. Temperatures should in the 10-15 degree range at kickoff with a chance of dipping into single digits.
49ers vs Packers Prediction
When the teams played during the regular season, the time of possession was split almost right down the middle. San Francisco will need for that to be the case again because the longer that Green Bay has the ball, the more that Rodgers, Jones, Adams and the rest of the Packers offense can pile up the points.
There are so many key players showing up on the injury report that the hours leading up to kickoff will be crucial
The Packers will be determined to finally get the upper hand on San Francisco in the postseason and move one step closer to a Super Bowl appearance.
Garoppolo won’t be asked to match Rodgers throw for throw since San Francisco was 29th in the NFL in passing attempts per game during the regular season, but he is 6-0 as a starter in the playoffs when he doesn’t have a turnover.
Although it took a last-minute drive for Green Bay to win the regular-season matchup, look for Green Bay to take control of this one early.
However, an interesting note for those who bet online: San Francisco is 3-1 in the playoffs against the Green Bay Packers when the game goes over the total.
