Two teams moving in opposite directions make for an interesting online betting proposition on Sunday afternoon when the struggling Cleveland Browns visit the upstart Washington Commanders.
The Commanders have not finished over .500 since 2016, but rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels has led the way to a 3-1 start after three consecutive wins. Daniels leads the NFL in completion percentage (82.1) and Washington averages 30.3 points.
Cleveland, which helped Kevin Stefanski win his second AP Coach of the Year award in 2023, has won just once in four tries out of the gate. The Browns have had their most trouble on offense, which must change to make them a worthy bet.
The way the NFL has been this season, expect the unexpected. The Browns were the best defensive team in the league last year and could wake up. The Commanders could come back to earth.
But we think Washington will continue its rise this week and be a good bet online.

Browns vs Commanders Betting Tips 10/6
1. Why Cleveland Woes Should Continue
Cleveland has a healthy Deshaun Watson back at quarterback this season after an injury-plagued 2023, but it has not helped the offense yet.
The Browns are second from the bottom in the NFL for yards per game (246.3) and averaging just 16.5 points through the first four contests. Watson has managed just 181.8 yards per game through the air. He averaged over 300 during his last season with Houston (2020).

With Pro Bowl running back Nick Chubb still a few weeks away from a return, the Browns aren’t doing much on the ground either. Cleveland’s defense has dropped a few notches as well after leading the league last season in yards allowed.
Watson was better in the 20-16 loss last week against the Las Vegas Raiders. There still might be a playoff team in that locker room somewhere late in the season, but it’s hard to think the Browns can beat the NFL spread in this one.
2. Why the Commanders Can Extend Win Streak
Daniels is in the running for NFL MVP through the first four weeks of his career and he looks quite natural doing it. He is also the favorite in NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year odds at -135.
The 2023 Heisman Trophy winner and second pick in the draft is averaging 224.3 yards through the air with just one interception and has run for 218 yards and four scores. Washington’s offensive line is much improved and Daniels has taken advantage.
Quinn on why Daniels won’t get ‘caught up’ in the early success: “All he’s shown all of us is a relentless approach to getting better and staying in the moment. If I had concerns I would have already addressed it. … He’s an easy guy to support.”
— John Keim (@john_keim) October 2, 2024
The Commanders can keep it going because they have a coach that took a team to the Super Bowl (Dan Quinn) and a retooled defense with veterans, led by linebacker Bobby Wagner (38 tackles).
Washington has players emerging at each position with running back Brian Robinson Jr. (307 yards, three TDs) and receiver Terry McLaurin (191 receiving yards, two TDs) allowing Daniels to mix things up. The Commanders are for real.
There’s no reason to think Washington won’t win a fourth game in a row at home. We would like to get better NFL odds, but take the Commanders on the moneyline.

3. Expect Both Teams to Find the End Zone
This is a tough call for over/under bettors. It really could go either way if Cleveland’s defense wakes up and the Commanders continue to improve on that side of the ball.
But we think there are enough playmakers on either side to put enough points to beat a relatively low total of 43 ½. Much will depend on how well the Washington offensive line contains the Browns’ pass rush – primarily Myles Garrett.
Garrett boasts four sacks and the Commanders have allowed nine. Meanwhile, Cleveland has given up a league-high 19 sacks.
Daniels should continue his strong play and Watson may build off his 24-for-32 effort last week with the potential return of productive tight end David Njoku. Take the over for your NFL picks and parlays.
PARLAY PICK: Commanders (-170) and Over 43½ (-110)
