Jaguars Solid ATS Pick at Lions
Two teams with a decent amount of hype around them will match up in the second week of preseason. The Jacksonville Jaguars will travel to face the Detroit Lions on Saturday after both teams won their opening game. Both teams are also favored in NFL odds to win their divisions.
The Jaguars have odds at -165 to win the AFC South while the Lions are not the clear-cut favorite at +135 to top the NFC North.

Jaguars vs Lions Betting Lines
Jaguars Buck Trend
Unlike other teams in the first week of preseason, the Jaguars let their starters get some playing time. It could be partially because of the team’s NFL lines to win the AFC South and head coach Doug Pederson probably not wanting to be slow out of the gates in Week 1.

Trevor Lawrence was solid in the first game of the preseason, only having one incompletion out of six pass attempts, which was an interception. However, he did make up for it by throwing a touchdown on his final drive. Wide receiver Calvin Ridley also caught his first two targets after missing last season due to a gambling suspension. The two have been dominating joint practices against the Lions.
However, the highlight of last week’s 28-23 win over the Dallas Cowboys was rookie quarterback Nathan Rourke. He threw for 153 yards and a touchdown, completing a highlight play in securing the Jaguars win.
The pairing of the two is a big reason why NFL betting is riding with the Jaguars with -200 odds to make the playoffs for the second straight season.
Lions Banking on Improved Defense
The Detroit Lions did not play their starters last week, choosing to be cautious. That led to an early mistake from quarterback Nate Sudfeld, who got the start in the 21-16 win over the New York Giants. He threw an interception on his second pass attempt. That was the first of two interceptions, which might prompt a move to have Teddy Bridgewater get more reps against the Jaguars.
However, the storyline from the Lions’ first preseason game should be the defense. They held the New York Giants’ offense, to 16 points, which all came off Detroit turnovers. Rookie linebacker Jack Campbell played a significant role in the defense’s success with four tackles and a pass breakup. The defensive line also stood out with five sacks, three going to Julian Okwara.
If the Lions plan on being solid NFL picks in the regular season, the defense has to step up. They were a top-five scoring offense last season and need the defense to improve. Based on last week, they seem to be trending in the right direction. If that is the case, the hype around the team could be accurate with odds at -170 to make the playoffs.
Jaguars vs Lions Head-to-Head
The Lions have won the last four games against the Jaguars, covering the spread each time. They met last season, with the Lions winning 40-14.

Jaguars vs Lions Picks and Prediction
Predicted score: Jaguars 24, Lions 16
Worth betting on the Moneyline?
A lot of the time in the preseason comes down to how well your starters perform, which does give the Jaguars an advantage, having played last week. On top of that, the Jaguars’ backups showed a lot more upside than the Lions, especially on offense, with quarterback Rourke taking over in the fourth quarter.
Worth to bet ATS?
Despite a clear improvement on the defensive side of the ball, without the Lions’ offensive starters in, they struggled to score. The offense did not score a touchdown until the final minutes of the game, and while Bridgewater should help a little, it might not be enough. That should help the Jaguars cover the NFL spread.
Worth betting on the Totals?
It is hard to tell with the points total in the preseason. This might be a bet to avoid because if the Lions’ starters get extra time, there could lead to more scoring, despite the struggles from the backups.
