Los Angeles Rams at New York Giants: Betting Guide

Are the Rams ready to receive the Giants?

The Los Angeles Rams played a Thursday night game last week. They hope the extra days of rest will come in handy against the banged-up New York Giants. This is a situation in which a West Coast team is traveling across the country to play a morning game according to body clocks, so keep that in mind for NFL game betting purposes. The start time is 10 a.m. Los Angeles time. The Rams hope to be ready.

  • Game: Rams (4-1) at Giants (1-4)

Head-to-Head

The last time these teams met was last year. The Rams beat the Giants, 17-9. Jared Goff was the Rams’ quarterback, not Matthew Stafford. That is a significant change. Saquon Barkley did not play in that game.

Last Game

The Rams defeated the Seahawks in Seattle on Thursday Night Football, 26-17. They got the job done, but the process definitely wasn’t pretty. Stafford made a number of bad throws and did not deliver the level of precision the Rams and head coach Sean McVay are expecting from him.

The one really good thing the Rams established in this game was receiver Robert Woods. The star from USC had been an important part of the L.A. offense in recent years, but he was quiet in September. He stepped forward with a big game and made downfield plays against safety Jamal Adams and the rest of the Seattle secondary. Matthew Stafford developed his connection with Woods, but at the expense of Cooper Kupp being taken away by the Seattle defense.

The Rams won this game not with their offense, but with their defense. They held the Seahawks to just seven points in the first half, and just to be clear, that was with Russell Wilson being on the field. Wilson got injured later in the game, and the Rams gave up a touchdown to backup quarterback Geno Smith, but all in all, the Rams contained Seattle’s passing game and the big-play combination of D.K. Metcalf and Tyler Lockett. If the Rams give up just 17 points on a regular basis, they are going to win a ton of games and be a frontline Super Bowl contender.

For those who betonline, The Rams are 3-2 against the spread and 4-1 in over-unders.

Injury Report

The Rams have two key injuries in this game, one of them severe. Cornerback Darious Williams, who is a very good player and a reliable one-on-one cover cornerback, is out. The Giants will try to pick on his replacement and try to get a lot of downfield passing yards in that matchup.

The other big injury is to tight end Tyler Higbee, who is questionable for this game.

Last Game

The Giants were crushed by injuries in a loss to the Dallas Cowboys. Barkley was knocked out of the game in Dallas and will miss this coming week as a result. Quarterback Daniel Jones was injured and had to leave, but he is going to be able to play this week. The Giants aren’t a good team. Their defense wasn’t able to withstand the firepower of the Cowboys’ offense, which was able to move the ball at will the whole game.

Not having their best offensive players available due to injury dramatically reduced the Giants’ margin for error. They won in New Orleans against the Saints a week earlier because they had a lot more of their offensive starters available to play. Head coach Joe Judge and offensive coordinator Jason Garrett have to be very creative with how they deploy their offensive personnel this week, given their more limited options against the Rams, an elite NFL defense.

The Giants are 2-3 against the spread and 3-2 in over-unders.

Injury Report

The Giants have received a lot of bad news on the injury front after their game against the Cowboys this past weekend. Barkley just can’t stay healthy. He is out for this game. He will be joined on the sidelines in street clothes by receiver Kenny Golladay, who is also out for this game. Quarterback Daniel Jones will be able to play, so that’s good news, but what receivers will he have to throw to? Receiver Sterling Shepard is probable but receiver Darius Slayton is listed as questionable. The Giants are really limited at the skill positions against a Rams defense with Aaron Donald, Jalen Ramsey, and other star defensive players.

Betting on the Game

Moneyline

Taking the Rams is a pretty solid bet. The Rams didn’t play well against the Seahawks in Week 5, so in Week 6, one can reasonably expect that Los Angeles will play better. If the Rams play better than they did in Seattle, it will take a great performance from the Giants to override that. Don’t bet on that happening with your NFL predictions.

Point Spread

The spread had been 10 points early in the week but has been bet down to 8.5 as people realize that Daniel Jones will play in this game. You just saw the Tampa Bay Buccaneers grab a 21-point lead on Thursday Night Football against the Philadelphia Eagles, only to take their foot off the gas pedal and win by six in a game they were favored to win by seven points. Certainly, some people are looking at that bad beat and thinking that a point spread of more than a touchdown feels like a trap. It could be… but the Giants are so injured that the Rams should be able to win comfortably.

Over/Under

The total of 48.5 is a hard one to judge. The Rams should be able to score reasonably well, but they also should be able to contain the Giants. Last year’s meeting between the two teams had just 26 points, but Jared Goff was the Rams’ QB, so that’s not a perfect measurement of how many points are likely to be scored. Frankly, stay away from the over-under here.

Final Score: Rams 33, Giants 13
