Things got pretty busy as the NFL trade deadline approached with injuries to key players just one of the factors in the deals being struck.
Very few who bet online prior to the season could have envisioned that a deadline deal between the New Orleans Saints and the Washington Commanders would result in the Commanders being the buyers while the Saints were the ones doing the selling.
Washington made a splash on Tuesday with the acquisition of veteran cornerback Marshon Lattimore from the Saints. Lattimore came into the season at +12500 in the NFL Defensive Player of the Year odds.
Only the New York Giants and Carolina Panthers had longer odds of being the top seed in the NFC when the season began. Now Washington (7-2) is tied for the fourth-shortest championship odds among NFC teams.
Receivers were very popular targets for contending teams looking for that ‘X’ factor that could help them make a run at the Super Bowl.
When looking at the NFL futures odds, the two-time defending Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs continue to lead the way at +400 to win Super Bowl 59. Detroit (+500), Baltimore (+600) and Buffalo (+900) are the next closest challengers. Each of those teams made moves at the NFL trade deadline.
Let’s take a look at which teams made notable moves as the trade deadline came and went this week.

Breaking Down NFL Trade Deadline Deals
It has been a bit of an unpredictable 2024 season and teams that came into the season with high hopes were willing to part with some draft capital if it meant that they had a better chance of making a deep playoff run. Let’s look at teams that could be better off in the NFL championship odds after the trade deadline and players that could benefit from a change of scenery.
1. Which Wide Receivers Can Make an Impact?
Mike Williams put up some impressive numbers catching passes from quarterback Justin Herbert with the LA Chargers. It was a different deal when Williams joined the New York Jets.
An injury limited his impact as Williams struggled to get on the field with New York. When the Jets traded for Davante Adams, who worked magic during his days with quarterback Aaron Rodgers with the Green Bay Packers, the days for Williams with the Jets were numbered.

Among the players who have been traded, Adams had the shortest odds at +4000 to be the NFL Offensive Player of the Year at the start of the season.
The Pittsburgh Steelers gave up a fifth-round pick for Williams. At 6-2, the Steelers are atop the AFC North and are second in odds to win the division at +220,
The favorite to win the AFC North is Baltimore (-190), which also made NFL news by acquiring wide receiver Diontae Johnson from the Carolina Panthers to bolster an offense that leads the NFL in scoring at 31.4.
Before the late rush of trades, a pair of other top Super Bowl contenders made trades for wide receivers. Cleveland’s Amari Cooper landed with the Buffalo Bills, who are -10000 to win the AFC East, and DeAndre Hopkins was traded from Tennessee to Kansas City.
When looking at the Week 10 NFL player prop bets, Johnson offers some value at +117 to have at least 32 receiving yards in a Thursday Night Football matchup between the Ravens and Cincinnati Bengals.
The Dallas Cowboys were pretty quiet despite injuries to quarterback Dak Prescott and receiver CeeDee Lamb. Is the acquisition of receiver Jonathan Mingo from Carolina enough for the Cowboys to remain in playoff contention? The Tampa Bay Buccaneers were pretty quiet as well despite injuries to receivers Mike Evans and Chris Godwin.
2. Minnesota Gets A Pass Protector
The Minnesota Vikings are trending in the wrong direction after an impressive start to the season. The Vikings previously added some insurance at running back by trading for Cam Akers. That was not the No. 1 priority.
Starting left tackle Christian Darrisaw suffered a season-ending knee injury. The Vikings sent a conditional fifth-round pick that could be bumped up to a fourth-rounder to get Cam Robinson from the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Robinson has been a solid tackle in Jacksonville but will be a free agent at the end of the season. It seemed unlikely that Robinson would be back with the Jaguars. Now he has a chance to help Minnesota reach the playoffs.
The Vikings entered the season as an NFL betting pick to finish last in the NFC North at +800, but now they are second in the division odds at +350 after a surprising 6-2 start.
3. Pass Rushers On the Move
Mr. Smith has a new home. Actually, a pair of Mr. Smiths had to pack their bags for what looked to be greener pastures.
Green Bay’s Preston Smith came into the season listed by the BetUS sportsbook odds with -115 odds to land either over or under 7.5 sacks. He is now a member of the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The Packers have used some recent draft capital to improve the pass rush and that made Smith a player on the way out of Titletown.
The Detroit Lions are still viewed as a Super Bowl contender even after the season-ending injury suffered by Aidan Hutchinson. Detroit made a move to fill that void by picking up veteran Za’Darius Smith. Smith has had at least 10 sacks in a season three times from 2019 to 2022.
When the season began, the San Francisco 49ers (+275) and Philadelphia Eagles (+450) had the best odds in NFL predictions of being the top seed in the NFC playoffs. Detroit is now the NFC betting favorite at +210.
4. Baltimore Tries to Stop the Bleeding
The Baltimore Ravens are listed by the sports betting odds as a top Super Bowl contender. However, being in the AFC with quarterbacks Patrick Mahomes of the Kansas City Chiefs, Josh Allen of the Buffalo Bills and Joe Burrow of the Cincinnati Bengals is not good news when you have allowed the most passing yards per game this season.
One move is not going to fix the pass defense for the Ravens but acquiring cornerback Tre’Davious White from the LA Rams is a pretty good place to start.
The San Francisco 49ers attempted to improve a leaky run defense with a deal for defensive tackle Khalil Davis.
