NFL Week 5 Teaser Basket (6-pt Teasers)

  • Team Line Teaser Leg
  • Jaguars -7½ -1½
  • Vikings -7½ -1½
  • Commanders +1½ +7½
  • Buccaneers -9½ -3½
  • Niners -7 -1
  • Chiefs -7½ -1½

49ers (-7) vs Panthers – Tease 49ers down to -1

So far, the Niners seem capable of anything, from losing an 11-10 snoozefest against the Denver Broncos (Week 4) to blowing out the defending Super Bowl champion Los Angeles Rams 24-9 (Week 5).

The Niners’ defense dominated proceedings, giving Matthew Stafford headaches as they ran riot over the Rams offense. However, Jimmy Garoppolo played a solid game too, even though the stats weren’t dizzying.

The Panthers, by contrast, are a liability for NFL bettors. Through the first four weeks, they’re 1-3 straight up (SU) and against the spread (ATS) with a 1.8 losing margin on average. The lone victory came against a banged-up New Orleans Saints side in Week 3.

The Panthers’ defense is pretty good. But the offense is catching a lot of flak for Carolina’s woeful start to the season. Mostly, Baker Mayfield, who is not cutting it for the Panthers, so the critics say.

However, Matt Rhule’s Panthers are 1-10 SU in their last 11 games in case everyone’s forgotten this nugget. A record that predates Mayfield’s arrival to Charlotte, N.C.

All told, the Niners are quite rightly the favorites against the Panthers in this game. However, laying a touchdown with the 49ers as they get set to face a desperate team is a bit risky. The Panthers’ defense could give Jimmy G some trouble.

Moreover, with the Panthers’ season on the line – and Mayfield under a lot of pressure – they’re potential dangerous floaters. They’re down but not out – yet. And they keep telling us that they’re close to getting it right.

The Niners should win, but covering a one-point spread feels a much safer bet in this scenario.

  • PICK: 49ers -1

Chiefs (-7½) vs Raiders – Tease Chiefs down to -1½

The Chiefs descend on the Raiders for another installment of “Mahomes vs. Carr” in this heated AFC West rivalry.

Patrick Mahomes has practically owned the Raiders ever since he took over as the Chiefs’ offensive pivot. He’s also outdueled, outplayed and outdone Derek Carr in almost every single meeting. Mahomes is what Carr wishes he could be. What many quarterbacks wish they could be – a generational talent that plays at an otherworldly level.

The Chiefs are riding roughshod over the AFC West with a 3-1 SU mark. Most recently, they’re coming off a statement 41-31 win on Sunday Night Football over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Raymond James Stadium.

Mahomes had one of his best games to date, leading the Chiefs to the win and cover as the two-point road underdogs. The Chiefs’ offense also showed in no uncertain terms that it can play well and score in abandon without All-Pro wideout Tyreek Hill

The Raiders were the lone winless team until they beat the Denver Broncos 32-23 in Week 4. A 1-3 SU start wasn’t the start that new head coach Josh McDaniels and the Raiders as a whole expected, to put it mildly.

But the Raiders have had a tough schedule to start the season. Arguably, some of their struggles are due to the quality of their opponents. They’re also in the midst of wholesale changes and those were bound to need time to take root and flourish.

It was an almost must-win scenario last week to salvage their 2022 campaign. The fact that they pulled it off will be motivation for this week, but the schedule is giving them no favors. It doesn’t get tougher than a date against the Chiefs.

Divisional rivalries can be unpredictable and the Raiders will hope that it works in their favor here – along with home advantage. It’s possible that they’ll be more competitive than the odds would have them.

Still, beating the Chiefs is a big ask. Let’s face it, nobody will be surprised if the Chiefs put in another big performance against the Raiders and cover as the -7½ road chalk for NFL picks against the spread . That said, teasing the point spread down to -1½ gives us a more workable spread in the event this game is closer than the markets have it.

  • PICK: Chiefs -1½
