NFL Upset of the Week – Eagles vs Commanders
Wentz On Revenge Tour
Eagles vs Commanders Betting Preview
The Philadelphia Eagles and Washington Commanders are set to reprise divisional hostilities this weekend when they collide in the nation’s capital. However, this time there’s a twist. Former Eagles starter Carson Wentz is now the frontman for the Commanders and he’s going to be extra motivated for this clash if only to prove a point against his old team after they replaced him with Jalen Hurts.
BetUS sportsbook tips the Eagles as the runaway favorite on the road, in part due to a red-hot 2-0 start on the season. However, they’re laying a touchdown to the hosts while the total is projected to be 47 points.

Will the Eagles come through for Moneyline and side bettors at the same time in this all-important divisional game? Or are the Commanders being severely underestimated at the expense of a highly-fancied Eagles side? Simply put, is the market spotting the Commanders too many points?

Eagles’ Stock Climbing
The Philadelphia Eagles’ stock skyrocketed following a 24-7 win over the Minnesota Vikings on Monday Night Football, which saw them improve to 2-0 and move into top spot in the NFC East alongside the New York Giants (2-0).
It marked the second straight boost for the Eagles at the sportsbook in as many weeks. The first came via indirect means, on the heels of Dak Prescott’s injury that saw the Dallas Cowboys’ odds drop dramatically. As the Cowboys went down in market estimation, the Eagles rose to the top as the team to beat in their stead.

Hurts appears to have answered his critics – for the time being. He’s more comfortable in Nick Sirianni’s offense now that it’s been adapted to suit his skillset better and his game is all the better for it, not least because he has more weapons to work with as well. And yet, it’s still the ground game that is dominant more so than the passing game. Hurts has three rushing touchdowns to 1 passing touchdown and an interception in two games.
The Eagles narrowly escaped with the win over the Detroit Lions in Week 1, holding off a late surge by Jared Goff and Co. to clinch the 38-35 victory at Lincoln Financial Field. In Week 2, it was a more complete performance from the Eagles as they trounced a Vikings team that looked strangely inept a week after dismantling the Green Bay Packers. Again, though, the Eagles were at home.
This is their first road game and, arguably, first test against a divisional foe that has played rather well all things being considered.
Wentz Adapting in Washington
Wentz and the Washington Commanders are 1-1 SU and ATS after two weeks. They opened their season with a come-from-behind win over the Jacksonville Jaguars, who are much-improved under new head coach and Wentz’s former mentor, Doug Pederson.
In Week 2, the Commanders got off to a slow start and ultimately paid the price as they took the 36-27 loss on the road at Detroit. They dug themselves a big 22-0 hole before they got on the board. Although they rallied in the second half, it wasn’t enough.

In spite of the mixed performances, Wentz currently leads the league with seven touchdowns, tied with Patrick Mahomes, Josh Allen and Tua Tagovailoa. He’s also second on the board with 325 yards per game on average. The only downside to an otherwise solid account is his three interceptions and six sacks.
Eagles vs Commanders Prediction
Although the Eagles strike a convincing pose as one of several undefeated teams in the league, the reality is that they’ve faced modest opposition from the NFC North. The Lions were one of the worst teams in the league last season while the Vikings are under new management after firing Mike Zimmer following a disappointing 2021 campaign. They were also widely overrated after their Week 1 win over the Packers.
The Washington Commanders may be 1-1, but Wentz has only just arrived in Washington after an unsuccessful run in Indianapolis. Allowances should be made for the inevitable growing pains that the veteran signal-caller will go through as he gets accustomed to his new digs.
It’s important not to get too carried away after the first two weeks of the season. The Eagles may be everything they appear to be and the hype surrounding them may also be warranted. But what if they’re not all that? This isn’t to knock on their success so far, rather an attempt to put things into perspective
The point is that this is the first real test of both these teams. So, a touchdown spread feels a bit too high to lay with the Eagles for NFL picks against the spread. Especially when they’re on the road and the game is underpinned by divisional implications. To a lesser extent, it’s also a personal grudge match for Wentz and that’s sure to provide some motivation for him to get the upset win.
