As the Dallas Cowboys proved last week, you do not need the other team to score a lot of points to cash the “Over of the Week.” Dallas whooped up on Washington to the tune of 56 points and singlehandedly covered the over. This week, we have a handful of blowouts waiting to happen as our three contenders judging by Vegas’ NFL odds
NFL Week 17 ‘Over’ Contenders
Second Runner-Up: Houston Texans (4-11) at San Francisco 49ers (8-7)
When: Sunday (4:05 p.m. ET)
Spread: Over 44
Kicking off this blowout-themed piece are the potentially Jimmy Garoppolo-less 49ers taking on the Texans on a two-game winning streak. Despite the 13-point spread, this one can get ugly and we’re banking on the scoring here being higher than the 44 points.
Houston has averaged 35.5 points in its last two games while the 49ers have given up 20 or more points in four of its last five games. So there is a good chance that at least one team scores 30 or more points here – that should be the 49ers
This was worth a mention but we’re not sure we want to trust the Texans, who have failed to hit double digits in scoring in six games. They were averaging just 13.6 points prior to their two-game explosion and these came against the 27th and 31st-ranked defenses.
First Runner-Up: Tampa Bay Buccaneers (11-4) at New York Jets (4-11)
When: Sunday (1 p.m. ET)
Totals: Over 45½
We can always count on Tampa Bay to score 30 or more points… unless the Bucs are playing New Orleans. The league’s second-best scoring offense has scored 30 or more points in 10 of their 11 wins. The only outlier? The NFL’s top defense: the New England Patriots.
So why is it that eight of their 15 games have gone under? It’s their defense, which has held opponents to just 18.5 points in wins. However, the Jets have an improving offense and Tampa is getting riddled with injuries on the defensive side of the ball.
It may just be that Tampa spots the Jets 20 points while dropping over 30 on them, which is the minimum New York has allowed in its last three losses. This is a strong contender to go over and is worth a bet online, superseded by just one game…
Over of the Week: Atlanta Falcons (7-8) at Buffalo Bills (9-6)
When: Sunday (1 p.m. ET)
Totals: Over 44½
The Bills not only smacked the Patriots but also every naysayer who labeled them as “pretenders” following their recent string of losses. Buffalo was getting torched on the online sports betting lines but despite being “only” 9-6, but when this team wins, it wins BIG.

Buffalo is averaging 35.7 points (the most in the NFL) in its nine wins with an average margin of victory of 23.5 points. The Bills have also destroyed every team under .500 except Jacksonville.
The Falcons have allowed the fifth-most points in the NFL and when visiting a winning team, they are allowing 37.5 points on average. Bet on the Bills as the NFL picks against the spread at 14.5 points plus the total going over. Buffalo may just cover 44.5 points by themselves while Atlanta gets at least a few.
