Last week saw an inordinate amount of upsets as underdogs crushed Las Vegas’ NFL odds. But that’s expected as Week 1 tends to feature more upsets than any other week. So expect a bit more predictability for Week 2.
With that said, we have two underdogs as contenders for Week 2’s ATS (against the spread) Lock of the Week though one favorite is emerging as the frontrunner.
NFL Week 2: Which of These Matchups Get the Lock?
Second Runner-Up: Detroit Lions
When: Monday (8:15 p.m. ET)
Spread: Lions +11½ -110
Yes, the Lions are bad and will stay bad but they showed last week that they are not “tanking” this season. They dropped 16 fourth-quarter points to cover their spread and will push the Packers this week as an encore.
The Lions are 7-1 ATS in their last games against the Packers and that includes being 3-1 in their last four visits to Green Bay. In fact, Detroit has only lost by double digits in two of their last eight games against GB. The average score differential when the Packers win is just 7.67 points.
NFL predictions have Green Bay blowing the Lions out here. Even if quarterback Aaron Rodgers and the offense rebound, their defense is still pretty bad and has never been that great at putting pressure on opposing quarterbacks.
Expect the Lions to put up a fight here and possibly even threaten to upset the Packers. It would be our Lock of the Week, but we still can’t entirely trust their defense.
First Runner-Up: Carolina Panthers
When: Sunday (1 p.m. ET)
Spread: Panthers +3½ -110
Before the COVID outbreak wreaking havoc with the Saints, we like Carolina to come through as an underdog and upset their archnemesis. Carolina has lost four straight against the Saints but every streak has to end so why not now?
New Orleans may be in for a disappointing performance here. This team has only won one Week 2 game in their last seven seasons. And they’re going up against a hungry and well-coached Panthers team that allowed the third-fewest yards per play last game.
The Saints ran roughshod over the hapless Packers, but the Panthers will test the Saints’ vaunted offensive line. Jameis Winston threw for five scores and no picks because he didn’t have to do much. But apply a bit more pressure on him and he will revert back to the same Winston that threw 30 interceptions that one season.
We’d tell you to run to the sportsbook and bet the Panthers. However, we’re not entirely confident that QB Sam Darnold will overcome the Saints’ potent defense.
ATS Lock of the Week: Seattle Seahawks
When: Sunday (4:25 p.m. ET)
Spread: Seattle Seahawks -6½ -110
We’re into the Seahawks as they looked revitalized in that 28 to 16 win over Indianapolis. Seattle was clicking as Russell Wilson was this close to averaging a perfect passer rating as the team averaged 7.2 yards per play as it easily shredded the Colts’ defense.
Now back in Seattle, expect the Seahawks to continue being automatic on offense, especially against the woeful Titans defense. Tennessee made Cardinals’ QB Kyler Murray look like an MVP as the Titans gave up 416 yards while managing just 248 with a 3.9 yards-per-play average.
Kyler Murray has 5 TDs thru 3 quarters for the Cardinals.

Seattle is our ATS Lock of the Week. They are 6-3 ATS as a home favorite and Tennessee is 1-4 ATS as a road underdog since last season. The Seahawks allowed the second-most passing yards last year but allowed only the ninth-fewest touchdowns. Their run defense is also top ten.
Take Seattle when betting online and don’t look back.
