Super Bowl LVII Information

While there is plenty of excitement surrounding the NFL Draft and free agency, football fans are waiting for the start of the 2022 NFL season. Following the Los Angeles Rams’ 23-20 win over the Cincinnati Bengals in Super Bowl LVI, there is plenty of excitement to see what team will make the moves to climb the mountain next season. Will the winner of the Super Bowl have a new quarterback for a third straight year, or will a team that developed their own guy break through?

Also, the previous two Super Bowl winners — the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Rams — both won as home teams. Arizona, which only appeared in Super Bowl XLIII, is now tasked with trying to keep up with that tradition. Here’s a look at all of the pertinent information surrounding Super Bowl LVII.

What Channel Will the Game Be On?

FOX will broadcast the game, while Westwood One will carry it on the radio.

What Time Will the Game Start?

6:30 p.m. EST

When Will the Game Be Played?

The game will be played at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona, on February 12, 2023. This will be the fourth Super Bowl in the Phoenix metro area and the first since 2015.

When Was the Last Time the Super Bowl Was in Arizona?

The State Farm Center — then known as the University of Phoenix Stadium — last played host to Super Bowl XLIX on Feb. 1, 2015. The New England Patriots won their fourth Super Bowl, scoring 14 points in the fourth quarter to steal a 28-24 victory from the Seattle Seahawks. That game is most remembered for how it ended.

The Seahawks had the ball on the Patriots’ 1-yard line with less than a minute left. Instead of giving the ball to bruising tailback Marshawn Lynch — who finished the game rushing for 102 yards on 24 carries –, Seattle had Russell Wilson try to slow a slant. The pass was intercepted by Malcolm Butler of New England, allowing the Patriots to steal the win.

Why Did it Take So Long for a Super Bowl to Take Place in Arizona?

Super Bowl XXX, a 27-17 Dallas Cowboys’ victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers, became the first big game in Arizona on Jan. 28, 1996, at Sun Devil Stadium. However, the Arizona state government’s decision to hold out on another political issue had caused the game to be moved out of state years earlier. Arizona was chosen to play host to Super Bowl XXVII after a bidding process that concluded on March 13, 1990.

However, the NFL would later pull the game from the venue as part of a nationwide protest. Arizona’s state government was refusing to recognize Martin Luther King, Jr. Day as a holiday. Arizona didn’t adopt the holiday until 1992 when the NFL decided to once again to consider Tempe as a site.

Super Bowl XXX Firsts

When Dallas celebrated beating the Steelers, the presentation for the Vince Lombardi Trophy was done on the field. That was a first, as previously, teams that won the Super Bowl would receive the trophy in their locker room. That tradition carries on today.

Super Bowl XXX was the first Super Bowl broadcast in the Navajo language. The Cowboys set a then-Super Bowl record for most appearances with eight. Dallas won a league-record fifth Super Bowl with the win, which has since been eclipsed by the Steelers and Patriots, who both have six.

No History Was Made in 2008

There is a great argument to be made — with all respect to Joe Namath’s New York Jets’ victory in Super Bowl III — that the greatest upset in Super Bowl history happened Feb. 3, 2008, at University of Phoenix Stadium. The New York Giants’ won as 12-point underdogs against the New England Patriots, stopping the Patriots from completing the first 19-0 season.

The Giants limited the powerful Patriot offense to 274 yards of total offense while gaining 338 yards themselves. The biggest play of the game came late in the fourth quarter. Giants quarterback Eli Manning scrambled out of the pocket, shedding a Patriots’ pass rusher tugging at his jersey and found David Tyree for a 32-yard completion. Tyree pinned the ball against his helmet and was strong enough to keep it there as he crashed to the ground with New England safety Rodney Harrison.

Manning would find Plaxico Burress on a touchdown pass with 35 seconds remaining, giving the Giants a 17-14 victory. Eli Manning, who passed for 255 yards and two touchdowns, would be named MVP.

Arizona Nearly Lost Super Bowl XLIX as Well

The NFL has a history of using its position of determining who hosts the Super Bowl to put pressure on politicians. The game between the Patriots and Seahawks was nearly moved due to Arizona’s SB1062. That law was put in place to allow businesses to use religion as a reason to refuse service to gays and others.

The NFL voiced concerns over the decision to state officials. Arizona governor Jan Brewer vetoed the bill.
